Lower Micron Fuel Filter Mod
The above is a Thread I started.
While I have seen some ads that claim the CAT (1R-0750) is a water
separator; that is not what it is made for. It was made to be a Secondary Filter similar in application to the stock Spin-on Filter.
It does hold about 1qt of Fuel so that gives a lot of room for water to collect at the bottom but the CAT Filter has no special features that I can recall that would make it a Water Separator.
I installed it because I wanted the absolute 2 Micron Filtration.
Reading through the various posts the best idea I have read is the Racor Filter that has the element that can be changed by just removing the Lid.
And, could still be used without the Filter element. But, this type costs more.
There is a lot of good Water Separators out there but the ones that have a Bowel on the bottom and Filter in the middle are messy to change without a little planning and something to drain the Fuel out of the Bowel before you start. I would not like to change one of those filters on the Road Side.
As a side note I bought a small CAT Water Separator that looks like the Stanadyne and the CAV ones. It is one of those Bowl, Filter in the Middle and housing ones.
When I looked inside what I found is that what is in there is actually a Screen. So it would be like having a Fuel Tank Screen under your hood.
The Water separation is done by gravity and that it acts as an expansion chamber slowing down the Fuel Flow.
It has a drain.

The one in the attached pic is similar style to the Standyne and the CAT (the one with the screen I was speaking of). Most come with a 10 or 20 micron filter element. The Bowels can be Metal, Plastic or Glass; and the sealing is done with 2 square cross section O-rings.

The euro made ones may not have US pipe threads on them.

Still a excellent read Though.
The adapter you made opens you up to numerous choices on filters since its a common thread size.

I like the RACOR 500FG.
Clear bowl that can be sumped and the filters top load so you don't lose your prime. It has a centrifugal spinner in the bowl and the filters have a water blocking element as well. Fool proof. Don't ask me how I know!

Thanks for the kind words.
As long as there is enough metal left after you drill and tap an Adapter for the Stock Filter Bolt any thread size could be used.

After that the limitation is the OD of the Filter Housing and where the seal ring is on the Filter you want to use.

Due to the expense of them I did not mention that there is a bunch of Spin-on type water separator Filters. Some of which share the same 1"-14 threads of my CAT mod. However, they are in the $30-35 each range.
To me that is too much to spend.

My Volvo Diesel has only one Filter, at 10 nominal microns; the same microns as the stock Mercedes one. But, it does have a Drain on it.

You can directly replace the Volvo Fuel Filter with the Baldwin BF7591-D (used in Deliveryvalves filter mod) because that filter has the same threads. That is what I have on my Volvo right now.
It also has a Drain at the bottom.

The Racor 500FG recommendation is a good idea, hope you have the room to mount it. I choose the smaller Racor 120A with a R12S 2 micron filter. Remote mounted behind the left headlight. Retained the prefilter, installed a outboard primer bulb in the hose before the Racor and then led it to the engine mounted filter.
