The part can be made out of fiberglass or carbon fiber but those materials are not as impact resistant as the plastic. I don't know what plastic it is but the part was probably made by injection molding.

But woven fiberglass is cheap and if I had the time and money I could probably replicate them out of FB easily.

I have a couple pieces of the W124

I think when I got the car both fronts and I "think" the passenger side rear were on and are in good shape. Hard to ship I think. PM me if interested.

They are hard to find in the yards because they are either

1) lost from previous owner
2) ripped off from when its in the yard
3) supposedly thrown out but are actually in someones garage, but thats usually w126 specific -chortle-

call your trusty parts person. I think they are not that expensive
They are not the same. They are different from gas to diesel and even different from OM602-603.

Pictures and part numbers are available at Dave's site.

Prices as of 10/24/2010 for OM603 panels

Front 1245205023
MSRP $302.00
Price $208.15

Under transmission 1245203424
MSRP$330.00
Price $227.70

I have 2 front panels that I'd be happy to pass along for the cost of shipping.

I"m not sure which engine they fit. The first one doesn't return a result when I price it. The second one is still available for $104 MSRP, but does not list a model.

Part numbers are 124 520 01 23 and 124 524 09 30

300SE/L received them also as they run around 3500rpm @ 70mph and nearly 4000rpm @ 80mph!

Featured side panels up front, main engine one, and the always missing trans cover. Not a HUGE difference in sound attenuation, but it is there. I would not go out of my way locating them.

Last summer I did some 'drill stops' and riveted in some reinforcement metal strips around some curved areas where stress cracks happened. I thought it was all plastic - until I drilled it and got a good look at what came out.

It seems to be a fiberglass core (at least in the high stress areas) with molded plastic around it.

They do have some reinforcement in the attachment areas. All of my 124 except the 500E had at least on broken/ cracked tab that i had to repair. It has been quite a few years but I remember using various techniques to repair them. Thin aluminum plate with the original tab sandwiched ( longer screws needed) when it was a small crack I just used a soldering gun on the plactic and welded it back together.
