The w140 diesels are rod bender engines. If engine was replaced by a rebuilt it might have updates in it.
If price was good,I'd replace engine and trans from a 300SDL. Then you would a pretty, reliable car.

You'd have a hard time finding any S300TD or S350TD because they were never built by Mercedes-Benz.

Yes, but you will find an S300 Turbo Diesel
![]() I assume you are not in the USA? Go for the S300 TD. It's got the OM606 engine which will be more powerful, and more fuel efficient. It is also less likely to have major internal engine problems then the 3.5l. -J

I think that its
300SD 300SDL 350SD The "T" in the numbers was only ever used to classify "touring" for the wagon. The "Turbo Diesel" badge on the right side Classified that fact that it had a turbo. I had a guy tell me they made an s class wagon. I don't think thats the case.

The S300 diesel was built in the mid-90s IIRC, it was a W140 with the rod-bender 3.5L but the nomenclature was changed back from S350 diesel to S300 diesel for marketing reasons I assume (in the US).

The W140 300SD Turbo was a 3.5L 603.
The W140 S350 Turbo Diesel was a 3.5l 603 Sold until 1995, i think the name change happened in 93? The W140 S300 Turbo Diesel was a 3.0l 606. This was not sold in the US market. Went on market in 1995.

A W140 with a turbo 606 would be just about the nicest car I could imagine for highway cruising. Like having a personal express train. *sigh*

Although I agree, I feel that the nicest 140 is the one that you're driving, and don't own.

Let me help you straighten that out. It was called the 300SD for the 92-93 model years, and had the 3.5L OM603. The nomenclature was changed from 300SD to S350 for 94-95 and it still had the same OM603. From 96 on, it was given the turbocharged OM606 engine and renamed the S300, but it was not for the US market.

As I understand it the diesels were always short wheelbase.

Then, you also get the later build W140. The later W140s were more refined than their earlier counterparts. Most of the kinks that plagued earlier W140s had been ironed out by that time, though with it being a W140, it still has its quirks that remind you that it's a W140. ![]()

I own a '94 S350D. It was imported in '94 and '95 and if I'm not mistaken these were the last S Class diesels imported. (There is another S350 but it is a gasser and still in production I beleive). Depending on who you talk to/read from, there were about 1000 of them imported at a starting price of 65K. The '94 also has an early/late VIN break, rear wheel bearings being different for sure. It is also more closely related to the S420 of that year as far as body parts go. Or so I've learned from searching for parts. Mine has just over 200k, I am the 4th owner, it doesn't drink oil or smoke, but does show the signs of neglect from owner #3. Rounding up aprts is always fun, but the rewards are great when you get it out on the road. It is by far the best ride I've ever been in. I'll put up with the W140 quirks> Now if I can shoe horn a E320CDI drivetrain in it...............
