Filter's clogged.
Probably should start shopping for a replacement even if the new filter fixes it, if you find lots of friction material in the pan.

I'll post a picture of what I find.
I'd really like to enjoy this car for a long time to come.

A couple of chunks of dirt (may be mud falling off the engine when I removed the pan) but that's all.
I opened up the filter and it just looks black. I'm off for a drive, keep your fingers crossed for me!

Wow, I have never taken one of mine apart...that looks bad, but may be standard. Anyone know for sure?

I'm back from a 40 mile drive and I'm cautiously optimistic. Drives like a dream. I even managed to get lost and did a little unanticipated light off-roading.
I wonder too what a filter SHOULD look like. Surely I'm not the first to cut one open? I'm hoping we can call this thread dead, at least for me. Thanks so much to all who've helped. I'll let you know if anything changes. Paul

I would consider an early change for the current filter, just to see what you have (especially if considering a long trip).
Happy that it's working properly.

A capital idea.
I'll make it part of my planned pre-winter "to dos". I feel like we've dodged a bullet and I'm falling for this car all over again. When people hear it idling, I always get that look. I really wish somebody would comment so I could explain that when their new Chevy or whatever is in the bone yard, my 300D will probably still be running. People are just too nice around here. I may never get the chance. I guess I'll have to drive it to Jersey or something..... Thanks

How many people give you that look from an 87 Chevy? Even around here where cars don't rust you don't see as many 20 year old Chevys as 20 year old MBs. Even 300Es still chug along. Corsica? Berreta? Lumina? Haven't seen one in months except at the pick-n-pull.

It's easy to forget that there are dry places.
80's cars aren't rare here, they just tend to be rusty. There are plenty of show cars around. Maybe it's a rural thing. The daily drivers, if they have some years on them are going to rust. I have a '73 VW Camper that was rust-free a couple of years ago. Now, I need to start all over again with the sheet metal and mig welder. I do see a decent-looking Chevette around sometimes though.

That's something I never heard even when Shove-its were new.

I suppose I SHOULD have said it's in decent condition though not particularly esthetically pleasing.
Didn't they have a starter button on the floor (like a Nash)? I can't remember for sure. Maybe that was the Datsun B210. BASIC transportation. Speaking of that, does SAAB still honor the lifetime warranty on the Shrike two strokes? That Mod's gonna come after me again....
