A mild upgrade is the turbo from the '90/'91 SD/SDL (OM603.970) with a .55 trim turbo and no drag-causing ARV.

If the oil mess is confined to the turbo, and no pieces are missing from the compressor wheel, I'd think that just swapping the turbo is where you want to go. Doesn't sound like oil starvation with the oil mess in the turbo.

Oh, I can say with a good deal of certainty that it was in no way starved for oil. This turbo is (hopefully) under warranty through phil so sadly this is not the time to upgrade.

My turbo doesn't have an ARV either.

No ARV? Nice. OE did, what turbo did you use?

The 86 never had an ARV, that was one of the changes for the 87 SDL. I used the original spec turbo.
