85 300td fuel economy
What is to be expected in the way of fuel economy for the 123's (turbo)? I've got 229k on the car & been getting 21-25mpg city & highway. Wondering if that is average. I've had the car for about a month & haven't dug into changing the fuel filters, air filter or done a valve adjustment yet. If my average is low maybe I'll get a little more motivated.
thank you Kindly, Tony 85 300d 229k |

sounds a little low
In my car I get 25 around town, or when driving on highways at speeds of 75 mph or higher with the AC on. If I keep it at 60-65 with no AC, I will get 28-29 mph. Only once did I get 30 mpg..that is when I drove on highway at 60-62 mph, with no ac.
If you do all the tune up things...new filters, good injectors, good compression, valve clearances adjusted etc, etc, you should do better.

I have also owned a wagon now for one month. My car has 182K and I have gotten 27 mpg. This is combination highway/town driving. I use Mobil diesel from a gas station that is also a truckstop. I have changed all the filters. I would get everything "tuned-up" before worrying about fuel economy. Have you used any injector cleaner yet?

I'll take care of those filters & valve adjustment, also the injector clean. It is rather low considering that I haven't been using the AC.

Remember also that good clean diesel is key. When I first bought my '80 300SD, I was using one particular brand, but then switched to this Mobil gas station/truckstop, and my fuel economy shot up 2-3 mpg. Try to avoid buying from a station where you may be the only diesel customer.

Your fuel mileage is low. I have a 39 km.commute one way to work (Canada) and I go thru a tank of fuel a week. That includes running around on weekends. By my unscientific calculations I am getting about 10 km. per liter - or about 30 mpg. My 78 km. commute is almost all highway driving thought. However, Since my mileage experiment I have taken to the habit of never letting my tank go below 1/2 and have not noticed any change in the amount of money I have to throw at the car.
I am sorry, but I can not say for sure why your fuel mileage is bad. I would adjust the valves. |
