Fuel filter O-ring
Tomorrow I plan on changing bolt fuel filters for the first time since I've owned the car.(6 months)
Every morning when I start the car I've had a slight miss until the car is warmed up. I've let the glow plugs glow two glow cycles but that has not fixed the problem. I have replaced and reamed all glow plugs with new Bosch glow plugs since I had no idea how old the were. The rest of the day, at lunch for example, car starts and runs beautifully. Just the miss in the morning after it has sat over night. I now suspect air in the lines. I have noticed a slight sheen of diesel fuel on to of the spin on filter housing. I have tried to tighten the bolt up and feel that has helped some but still have the miss. The O-ring or washer on the fuel filter bolt may be the problem. The other fuel lines look okay. Cigar hose is not a cigar hose, It's just a 5/16 fuel line. No other signs of a fuel leaking. The primer pump is brand new too. It leaked badly when I bought the car. Does my '82 300D have both a copper washer and a rubber o-ring on the fuel filter bolt? And if so is there a specific size for both? Sorry for the long post. |

I believe you have the later version, but check the part # of the housing, if there is a 01, older version, or 02, newer version. This number is the next to last two part numbers.
The newer version does not use a crush washer.

Autozone sells a Metric O-ring assortment made by Dorman for less than $8.
Dorman 172 piece O-ring Value Pack #799-450 In it are 24 of the 6mmUDx10mmODx2mmW O-rings that you need for the bottom of the Oil Filter Stem: enough for 12 Oil Filter Changes as you need 2 O-rings each time you change it. The 10mmIDx17mmODx2.5mm in the kit fits the bottom of the Filter Bolt; you get 24 of those in the kit. The 14mmIDx19mmODx2.5mmW appears to fit the large upper O-ring (if you have the Filter Bolt that takes 2 O-rings) but I have not actually tried that yet. You get a total of 172 O-rings in various sizes.

So it is possible my filter bolt may need 2 o-rings? I assume it will be apparent when I remove the bolt. The bolts that have 2 o-rings must have 2 recessed places for the o-rings to sit and one o-ring bolt must only have 1? Sorry if I'm being over analytical. |

If you don't see the copper washer peeking out from under the bolt head, you probably have the newer type with 2 o-rings.

Yes, there is a machined channel for each one, it will be obvious once you have the (banjo) bolt out, see pic.

Red Arrows
toomany MBZ,
Not trying to hijack thread, but how did you put those red arrows on the picture you posted? Thanks.

I am not sure how others do that but if you have one of the Microsoft Windows operating systems it comes with Paint. If you Right click on a picture a menue comes up and you select "Edit" that takes me to Paint. When you get to Paint on the left side is a menue. Left click on the Line and a box opens to select how thick of a line you want then you have to apply the Curser to where you want and Left Click and hold it down a pull the Mouse to draw your line. Just pick something and practice. Other add on Photo Shop programs have similar ways to make the arrows.

Copy the photo you want to edit into Power Point slide then you can add all the labeling you want, then save it as jpeg so you can use it a photo to post. You can draw or make any image in power point then save them as jepg to share online.

Looks like mine is the 01 style.
![]() Is it possible to update it to the 02 version and if so is there any advantage to doing so? |

to update, I believe you would have to replace the filter base from a newer car. I like the crushwasher. but I'm sure the o-ring system is simpler to change without issues as long as the o-rings are good.

I've underlined the two numbers that will tell you which filter head you have, the 02 denotes the later version with no crush washer and two rubber "O" rings. If yours has an 01 instead, you have only one "O" ring on the banjo bolt and a crush washer. Second pic is my old 240, note the 01 and the crush washer.

Again! toomany MBZ has come to the rescue. Now I do not feel so bad since you helped me with this same thing 3-4 weeks ago. Even the nice kid at the local MBZ dealer kept telling me that my car should only have one O ring until I stepped behind the counter and showed him on the screen. I still have some fuel weepage but no longer from the top of the fuel filter. I need to replace all fuel lines. I know that more than a few of these are original.

The 5/16" ID Fuel Hose sold in regular Auto Part stores is rated for Diesel Fuel and if you are going to use Bio Fuels their Fuel Injection Hose they sell is lined with a material Members have said if Viton (at least the GoodYear Fuel Injection Hose is lined). Fuel Injection Hose SAE J30R9 or 30R90 SAE 30R7 is the Regular Fuel Hose.

Thanks for the photos. Mine is indeed the second one. The crush washer is copper? If it is indeed copper I guess I'll need to go shopping again. I have a lot of copper washers but none that large. |
