do all Bluetecs use AdBlue?

Would any US spec 2008 E320 Bluetec have AdBlue injection, or do some use AdBlue and others get away without urea injection?

Thanks,
Sixto

I'm not sure, but I thought the first generation bluetec (including 2008) did not use injection.

You know me - ask first, research later:

http://alternativefuels.about.com/od/researchdevelopment/a/bluetec.htm

And the reason you want a 2008 E320 rather than a 2009 or later that uses AdBlue -

http://blogs.consumerreports.org/cars/2010/01/mercedesbenz-gl320-bluetecfeeling-a-bit-adblue-over-spending-a-lot-of-green.html

Makes me wonder why someone who changes their own oil can't add their own AdBlue from a VW dealer at $15 for a 2.5 gallon bottle or even the $15 for a half gallon MB charges.

That's what I thought.

Keep in mind that we are talking about an additional $0.02/mile operating cost on a car that probably costs about $0.50 to $0.60/mile to operate. This is not a DIY car.

Yes, Bluetec engines use AdBlue (but not all common rail engines are Bluetec) and it's about $6.00 per gallon (non factory brand diesel exhaust fluid) made for Mercedes truck engines that will work in Mercedes Bluetec cars. The cost in real life (for a car) comes out to about an additional two - one hundredths of a cent per mile. A few weeks ago I saw it for about two Euros per liter in Germany (from a dispenser between pumps at a gas station, not cheap but right off the autobahn.) THEN, in a Shell station out in the country, I found some for 7.50 Euros for a 5L can. If you are buying your own, don't get it at a Mercedes dealer - way too expensive. Go to a Freightliner or Volvo truck place and get it.

I've read several places that on the MB even if you find the fluid, changing it yourself is a pain and may not successfully solve the sensor problems, computer problems, 20-starts-remaining, all the nightmares that seem to come with it. Does this imply that it's possible/reasonable to DIY your own in the MB or are these stations primarily selling it to VW drivers and others who are working with more reasonable car manufacturers?

it very easy to add the cow piss (i think thats what kind of piss extract it is) yourself. i can't remember if you need to reset it w/ the sds. wouldn't suprise me if you did need the sds just like once your ec light comes on due to low r134, even when you evac and recharge, you still got to clear the fault memory in the climate control to have ac. and that is a scam to screw more money from the customer.

Consumer reports is funny. They love the prius but when mercedes benz comes out with a low emission higher MPG version of gas guzzling poluting SUVs they show you all the math to say its not worth it. IMO the future isn't about cost, its about saving fuel and lowering emissions.

So not all Bluetec cars use adblue?

But with 80+ cars here each year, and multiple lifts and mechanics, it would be a needless hassle and expense to take every car to the dealer to change the oil. Since we had changed our GL’s oil ourselves, we wound up making a trip to the dealer to get AdBlue added.

The first engines were not called blutec, they were just "cdi"

You don't change the fluid. It's consumed in the exhaust treatment, you refill the reservoir as it's depleted. The systems are designed to need refilling once with every oil change. There is a fitting the dispensing nozzles at the gas stations (and cans the garages use) you must have to fit the reservoir so it's not as simple as 1. Open cap 2. Add solution. It is DIY possible with the correct fitting. Some commercial trucks are a different story - open cap, poor in liquid, "DEF" light goes off, keep on driving.

I've seen two E class cars and the M class, of the ones with the "Bluetec" badge, all of them used diesel exhaust fluid. BMW's new diesels also use it.

I started regularly reading CR in the late '80s. Sometime in the mid '90 they started writing very subjectively but stopping short of endorsements. When the Honda Insight came out, they also ignored the cost of future battery replacements, as if it's not even applicable.
