Wow... 1973 Mercedes Benz 408 Fire Truck

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/1741216856.html
Mercedes 408 Firetruck imported from Germany.
This one has a tiny 4 cylinder Mercedes 2.4L gasoline engine and a 4 speed manual transmission.
The main water pump on the front is driven from the front of the engine and the lights and sirens work.
Despite it's size and weight, it's geared so low it can zip along, even fully loaded .... to about 45 MPH.
On the freeway, it tops out at about 55MPH , MAXIMUM, not entirely pleasant if you need to get someplace in a hurry, but OH BOY will you ever get a lot of thumbs up while people pass you!

Might be late getting to the fire but I bet it sure worked better than the team of horses and hand pump wagon it replaced !!

It would make a cool RV.

Well.....I'm not buying it; although it might be more dependable than my Dodge truck.

This is my neighbors L408. It was also a fire truck when he bought it (same red paint can found in some places) and it was also found in the Portland area.

This one however has a 350 Chevy under the hood and is positively terrifying to drive! No power steering and very heavy brakes.

There's another Mercedes fire truck on Portland Craigslist:
http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/1743046381.html

from ad:
"1977 Mercedes 1017 4WD ex-fire truck, crew cab for 7 people. Has 7-ton knuckle boom crane, extends 18 feet, 20K lbs winch, generator,
and crank up light mast. Storage box for equipment with roll up doors. Needs some TLC, low miles and hours.
Will make a great expedition vehicle. Divorced transfer case. Ten lug wheels for easy conversion to Alcoa's. This is a rare truck,
maybe even the only one in the States. I've had it for 10+ years. Only 18 foot long without crane. This is a wheelin' machine!! "

I thought they had power brakes as OE.

That is very rare. Price is very good. It must be in rough shape.
