Stepping into the tar pits.......

Father in law type person (Ed) needed wheels that would go more than 3 miles without needing water, so Darling Wife and her Twin Brother and I pooled our fundage and bought him some in the form of a 1990 300D 2.5.

Tight, clean, screaming red, 239k miles. Owned for the last six years by a guy Ed has called 'the best mechanic in Maryland' for the last couple decades.

Only issue we want to work out - harsh shifts, especially when cold, primarily 1-2.

Looks like there is LOTS of related info in this forum - any pointers you fine folks might have on which of what looks like ~ a gazillion threads would be the best starting point would be most appreciated.

Probably your best start point is
Resources tab at top of screen
then DIY articles
then Tuning transmission Vacuum under General Repairs.

Good starting point.

and while this thread is specifically for the older benz, there is a TON of info here.
It's CRITICAL... how you set your transmission's vacuum system on your diesel MBZ...

Alda adjust will help with part-throttle harsh shifts, next step would be looking for vacuum leaks.

Finally got a chance to get into this today. Two steps clockwise to the T-handle at the modulator on the side of the transmission later, and she's shifting like butter.

Thanks for the pointers folks - I now know far more about how the shifts are controlled; really glad that the first, simple adjustment made the difference. From everything I read, sounds like it only gets more complicated as you stack up the variables.

You Have, Simply Stated, Defined MB Tranny Adjustment

Have to start with a "Baseline" of the Engine "Making Proper Power"
('Else the engine difficulties will disguise as Tranny Problems.)

Stevebfl's articles:
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/TransVacTune
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/19841-transmission-shifting-response-vacuum-span-stevebfl-you-out-there.html#post100041

and

SMR's :
It's CRITICAL... how you set your transmission's vacuum system on your diesel MBZ...

Are an excellent starting point to understand the system.

I'm afraid a lot of owners jump right in where they PERCEIVE the problem is
[without really understanding AND correctly Diagnosing]
Making their attempts at correction a Journey Farther and Farther away from
The Proper Adjustment Sequence.
