removing and installing harmonic balancer on 87d
My timing chain case broke and I am trying to replace it with the engine in the car. I am down to removing the crank bolt and harmonic balancer, does anyone do this without the crank lock, will I need some sort of gear puller to remove the h.b.? I think I can remove the crank bolt by bumping the starter but Im not sure how I can rig a way to tighten it. Any suggestions? Did a search but didn't find what I was looking for.

I don't know the specifics of your motor, but you'd have to brace something in the flywheel. see if you can put a long bar into the space between the TC and the Flywheel.

Ok, so I have removed the crank serpentine pully, bolt and harmonic balancer but I am unsure about one thing: behind the harmonic balancer there is the plate that the pulley's bolts go into which is on the end of the crank, how does this come off, do I use a gear puller? I just want to be sure so I don't break the crank

Did you remove the crank bolt? I've removed the crank bolt with an impact, then the balancer with a puller, didn't use a lock. Torquing the bolt back in will require locking the crank though.

When I put mine on i just put a healthy dose of loc-tite on it and put my impact on it (sans radiator) and let that puppy beat on it for about a minute. I've got about 12,xxx miles since. Fingers are crossed still beings as it was a mismatched HB from the junkyard.

Yes I have removed the crank bolt( put breaker bar on and bumped the starter), then I removed the pulley with six bolts and then the h.b., my question is about the part behind the h.b. Do you remove this with a puller? The crank seal nor the timing case can be removed unless this disk at the end of the crank is removed, how do I remove it?

Use a Puller CAREFULLY ,if it gives you trouble.
It's "Secured" (From rotation) by a Key fitted into the inset in the Crankshaft.
The only thing holding it onto the Crankshaft is the Main Bolt. (#157 in the first diagram is what's causing you distress) Details [Such as Mercedes deigns to gift us with] Here: http://www.ps2cho.net/downloads/MB%20CD/W124/w124CD1/Program/Engine/602_603/03-3000hw.pdf The "Lord ,Please don't let me Harm this fine piece of German Steel" parts are: 1.The sealing surface of the inner lip of the Timing Cover. 2.The sealing surface of the Crankshaft. 3.Almost anything to do with the parting surfaces of the DOWELS and the (Dreaded) HARMONIC BALANCER.AND their interface with the Nose of the Crankshaft.

Ok, I now see what keeps it from rotating.
