Loose Power Steering Pump = motor oil leak
1976 240d problem. What I thought was a power steering fluid leak turned out to be a motor oil leak. The power steering has been coming and going recently, so I figured one of the lines was either loose or had a puncture in it and that I was loosing oil and also getting air in the line. Well, the power steering fluid level has not dropped in a week. In a panic I checked the motor oil level, it was low but not drastically low. I degreased the engine at the car wash and started it back up. Once it was clean I noticed that due to some neglect on my part, the power steering pump was missing 2 bolts to the left of the pump. One bolt looks like it goes into the bracket and one might go into the block. This morning I noticed a 3rd bolt missing! This one looks like it goes right next to the oil pan, behind the pump.
So, has anyone experienced this problem? I found one guy that has: "I have had similar problem on my 1982 240D and it turned out to be a bolt on either the power steering pump or airconditioning compressor bracket that came loose." "The bolt went into the block and penetrates one of the oil passages. I do not know if this is a tolerance stack up issue or if it is on all the 240D and 300D engines. Jim" And, does anyone know the size of any of these bolts? I'm thinking for the cost of labor and only 3 bolts, I might take the car into the shop this time. Can't be too much of a repair charge. The bolt that goes into the side of the oil pan is really tough to get to. I feel good that at least I have tracked down the motor oil leak. |

Yes the bolt holes are drilled completely through the block for some of the brackets bolts.

Thanks for the answer. Is it just me, or does that just seem wrong, to have the bolt holes also function as a plug?

Those bolts are not plugs. The only thing in that area I can think of is the oil line for the IP, it's a clear plastic line with banjo bolts.
