Shifting problem
1984 300TDT with 319K.
Symptoms - Shifts OK between 1st and 2nd with a slight clunk. Slips when going from 2nd to 3rd, much like a mis-shift on a standard transmission, but then goes into 3rd. No problem from 3rd to 4th. Moderate clunk downshifting. Clunks seem to be more noticeable than before the problem appeared. This happened all of a sudden. I had a significant clunk problem a few months back, which was resolved by replacing a 2 inch piece of vacuum line. Does this appear to be vacuum related? Or do I need to look elsewhere? I will be checking out the monster thread on this issue, but thought someone might recognize this and speed up the process. Thanks in advance.

It could be vac.Old connectors can leak.Try sucking on line to trans, then stick tounge on it,to see if modulator loses pressure. This works to on a modulator at injection pump.

low vac normally gives harsh shift. Biodiesel recently had this problem & I think he fixed it. K1 & K2 springs were involved. There is a valve spring kit that is designed to fix harsh shifts & flairing.

I notice on the black Vacuum Valve Lever box on top of the valve cover that the vacuum lines run into, there are two "ports" which have no lines connected. Is something missing, or is that normal on an '84 300TD?

normal. it's best to disable all the hoses going to that box and plug the EGR that it controls.
