How To ID Your Turbo 617.952 300 W123
I had a little trouble looking through the forum trying to figure out what kind of turbo I had. Here's a quick instructional.
This is where you'll find the ID label for a Garrett turbo. The KKKs are different. I removed the U-bend and air filter to get a good look. The first image locates the turbo looking from the front of the car. The second image locates the turbo from the passenger side. The smaller red box locates the label itself. It will probably need cleaning. The final image is a closeup of the turbine housing where the label is. The label is pretty hard to read while in the car. I took a bunch of pictures with a digital camera until I got one that I could read. One of those little dentist's mirrors would have been handy. This particular car, '84 300TD Turbo, had a Garrett T3 465228-3, also referenced as TA0301. I had to locate the turbo type so I could order a rebuild kit. I rebuilt the turbo using a full kit ($100) from G Pop Shop. Definitely a DIY job. It did not require rebalancing as long as you follow the instructions carefully and make sure everything is lined up exactly the same as when it came apart. Of course, I only have a few hundred miles on the turbo so I'll update if it explodes or something.
