300SDL front suspension rebuild
Ok, so in the next few weeks ahead with warmer weather coming (hopefully on it's way), I am planning on going through the front suspension on the 300SDL (before state inspection in May). I plan on replacing most all items since I have a lower ball joint (definitely shot), center drag link (with some obvious play) and both tie rod ends with ripped/worn boots to replace.
I am planning on replacing ball joints, steering components, front shocks and all related bushings, etc., per the shopping list I got from Phil. My questions are: 1. (Comments only, not a question): I've read the archives about having to use a spring compressor and can see that it can be done (with care and safety) without this tool. And I have oxy/acetylene torches if needed for persuading the old parts to come out. 2. As far as tools go, since I will be replacing everything, will a simple pickle fork work for removing all tie rod ends and center drag link since I'm not concerned about damaging them upon removal? 3. I have access to a press in the shop I work for, so (I beleive?) that the new ball joints can be pressed in with that (and maybe some special press tools that I can fab)? But is the 'special' ball joint removal tool necessary to remove the old ball joints? And if so, does anyone know what size is required (if I decide to purchase one)? ie: 4. For the other parts involved: sway bar bushings and idler arm kit - are there any 'special' tools required to remove and replace these components? I am just trying to get my 'ducks in a row' ahead of time, so as to be ready to dive in... Thank you! (... And as always, this is a great site and MANY, MANY thanks to all who contribute their wealth of knowledge and experience to all it's members...) ~Andy

You need a spring compressor to be able to R&R the LCA bushings. You can do the ball joints without the need of a compressor as the front shock holds the assembly together. UCAs are easy, just unbolt and install new.
Ball joint removal is easy, installation is another matter. The proper tool is about $350 shipped. If you want to make one, go for it. If not, rent one from a member or just ask a local MB shop to press them in for a small fee. Others have done it with tools available to rent at places such as Auto Zone. Idler arm, yes you need a hydraulic press to R&R the bushing. You MAY have to remove the exhaust to gain access. LCA bushing and the round strut rod bushing are somewhat of a pain.

Oh and do not forget to replace the spring shims and the springs, after 25 years both are fatigued enough to warrant replacement.
Also the rear diff mount and rear subframe mounts.
