W-123 Transmission Not Engaging
I had a scary thing happen today. Starting off from a stop when my 1985 TDT shifted to 3rd ( W-123s start in second normally right?), it slipped bigtime in the 2-3 shift. I was going about 35 mph max. I pulled over, put it in park and reverse and back to park. Then I drove home normally, that is ,everything shifted normally. What's going on ? This car has about 345,000 miles. This isn't the B-2 problem is it ? Anyone have any ideas ?

I forgot to mention the filter has not been changed in about 150,000 miles, could that cause what I described ?

Probably fluid has not been changed either.
All you can do is change them and hope for the best. A blocked filter could cause all sorts of strange things. Dirty old fluid is a bit like kidney failure, it creeps up slowly. Has the car had any other maintenance?

I understand a clogged filter reduces the fluid pressure. A/T fluid is not just a lubricant, it is also a hydraulic agent that activates valves inside the transmission...
I ain't no expert though... just trying to help.
