What size is the 240D manual transmission drain plug?
I have a 1982 240D. Does anyone know what the size of the allen wrench needed to remove the transmission drain plug? My allen wrenches set doesn't go up that high so I need to procure the specific size.
Also, does any one know the size of the square filler plug for said transmission? Lastly, is there a wiki on doing the transmission fluid change? I thought I had seen it before but can't seem to find it. I thought dmorrison had done it but can't seem to find it. Thanks for your help. It's much appreciated. Thanks, Kurt

If you can find one of the tools that came with the car it has all those correct ends on it..and is long enough to provide a good handle. One end is bent to reach these places...
Also, be sure to take out the top plug on these things just in case... I posted pictures of using a come along to the rear jacking hole for really stuck axle plug.

agreed, make sure you can get the side one out first otherwise you will end up with an empty tranny and no way to fill it.
filling is easy. buy a fluid lift pump at Autozone or Pep Boys and on level ground fill it through the side hole till it comes out

The fill and drain plugs should be a 14mm allen. I'd suggest a 14mm hex bit socket for your ratchet. You're probably going to want it on a 1/2" ratchet or braker bar they are going to be tight.
It's a really simple job. FIRST - Loosen the fill plug. If you pull the drain plug and can't get the fill plug you you are up poop creek. Then remove the drain plug. Let all the fluid drain out. A good warm transmission will help drain all the fluid out quicker. Once it's drained put the plug back in and fill it until the fluid drips out the fill hole. Put in Dextron ATF. I've had Redline MTL in mine before and I started getting some grinding when I down shifted from 3rd to 2nd. I put ATF in and it went away and has been shifting great ever since.

Not quite 2 qts . . . I just used a tube and a funnel to fill mine from the engine bay.

As per JimSmith's information in the archives..
be sure to check on the fluid you use.. some have chemicals which will attack the brass synchros or something.. For that reason I use Redline MTL.... also from JimSmith...

I agree. MTL made shifting much worse but switching back to ATF fixed it.

Interesting that yall seem to consider ALL ATF's to be identical and interchangable....
