Mobil Recommends M1 0W-40 for my 1993 300D???
I thought their auto selection tool would surely pick Turbo Diesel & Truck...
What gives?? Does anyone else use 0W40 in their Diesel? M1 0W40 Also, TD&T does not say it is MB 228.31 approved. Is it? Thanks.

The M1 0W-40 is I believe a class III synthetic, not a true synthetic.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but aren't all Mobil 1 oils class IV synthetics?

Devil is in the details.

In Raleigh we don't need it, I use TDT 5W-40 and my lifters like it. I'm going to Amsoil Euro formula soon because a friend can get it for slightly less than Mobil 1 cost. As far as the 228 rating, I think 229 ratings include some 228 specs - I may be wrong about that, though. I'm not sure if Mobil would write back if we asked but it couldn't hurt. One thing I do know about new oils...one of my part time shop buddies works for Volvo Trucks N.A. in Greensboro doing testing, mechanical and R&D. There are BIG changes in diesel emissions standards coming and one of the problems meeting them is zinc and phosphorus in oil contaminating the exhaust treatment process. The newer oils are good for this but the old timer mechanics are saying to use a zinc supplement (ZDDP) with older engines. WAIT! FOUND SOMETHING! see also, "table" at the end of the paragraph.

From reading the specs, it looks like good oil. It's not what I use, but I don't think you would be going wrong using it.

No.
The TD&T (also Delvac 1) and the extended-mileage Mobil 1 are class IV, the rest of the Mobil 1 family is not, introduced a few years ago to combat cheaper synthetics from other manufacturers. Amsoil started to introduce Class III and blends about the same time. Castrol EDGE is a good up-and-coming class IV syn oil, only available locally in a couple of flavors and I haven't checked for a diesel rating, but I've always liked their ATF (AKA: Allison Transynd) and dino oils.

Nothing Lower than 5W40 with an OM602(Anywhere in the Southeast)
'Doesn't Matter (We don't care) what Mobil says.
[What does your OM say?] [Viscosity Requirements are basically set in stone by the Manufacturer of the Engine] [What does Technical @MB in "Nieu Joisey" say?] Any Viscosity lower and You're Playing With the Need for a new engine... Much,Much earlier than you should be.

15W50 is good oil. It has the most anti-wear additives of any of Mobil's synthetic oils.

Must be extremely recent. The bottle I bought last weekend is marked for CF.

So any CF rated oil is all I need to adequately protect my 602?
