ALERT! Cash-for-Clunker cars now in pick a part yards

Went to local pick-a-part yesterday. There were some incredible cars just arrived from cash for clunkers program. Don't miss out--this won't last long.

Yes, three 124s in Windsor (northern Cal.) -- all 300Es, an '89, a '91, and a '94, all in decent condition, all with "CARS" painted on them and pink spray paint on the block.

You might want to AVOID the engines....

...Sixth paragraph....

...See also... BTW, I completely agree with the headline, "This Is Too Absurd To Even Describe."

While I don't necessarily agree with the program, destroying the engines is a MUST... since one of the goals of the program was to remove gas guzzling vehicles off the road. If they weren't destroyed, what would stop individuals from reusing those engines (defeating the purpose stated above).

However, I'm seeing a lot of nice vehicles being scrapped which is sad.

Local car dealers here are cashing in on the Cash for clunkers idea here in Canada, but the cars that are turned in are simply going onto the used car lot. which defeats the purpose...partially, but puts more 'efficient' cars out there....not enough people own Benzes around here to make it of any benefit to me

That's a laugh (or cry). Did you see the list of all vehicles sold under that program? 3 of the top 10 are SUVs/light-trucks, the Ford F150 and Chevy full-sized pickups being 2 of the top 10 nameplates sold. They simply traded old guzzlers in on new guzzlers. Further, really old and polluting vehicles weren't eligible, etc., etc.

It was to create a bump in the economy so that our prez could point and say "the economy is recovering".

Also note that most of the vehicles were Korean and Japanese nameplates.

Well done.

The program was a "stimulus package" for the auto industry and nothing more.

Nonetheless, the CARS program is bringing cars into the junkyards that would otherwise continue to be driven. The three that I mentioned in post #2, above, were quite nice, with lots of usable parts for guys like me. Since they were all gassers, I wasn't interested in the engines anyway and was just happy that the program allows parts other than the engines to be sold by the dismantlers. Interestingly, I have yet to see a diesel 124 in Windsor Pick and Pull.

Not sure what point you were making in quoting that snippet, but I don't deny it was an economic "stimulus". However one stated goal WAS removing gas guzzling vehicles off the road. Pollution wasn't part of the equation, should it have been sure, but they simply targeted low MPG vehicles... for good or bad.

What were the new gas guzzlers? Since my understanding was that only certain vehicles were eligible for purchase, then again I had no interest in the program so I'm not fully up on its stipulations.

I'll have to find the list again, read it in the Detroit News, but three of the top-ten vehicles purchased (rated by quantity purchased under the program) were the full-size Ford pickup, full-size Chevy pickup, and an SUV which IIRC was the Equinox? Clearly not high-fuel-mileage vehicles.

No, not "high" fuel mileage vehicles, just better.

Not commenting on how they got there...
I have to familiarize myself with "scrap yards." I don't think there are any pick a part yards within 100 miles of me, if there even are any here in the New York/New England area. There are many yards in the metropolitan New York/New Jersey area about 80 miles away. And I don't imagine I'd have the luxury of walking the yard to see what they have. To get it up to snuff, I've had to replace many parts on the '87 300TD where new parts made sense. But it's getting to the point where much of the remaining fixing could be done with used parts.
