The smoke was going puff puff puff puff ---- it didn't seem "uneven" like maybe EVERY cylinder was producing a "puff". The amazing thing is this car seems like it is on the verge of starting and then I decide I've cranked the starter enough.

Sounds like stuck rings.

Soak each cylinder in Marvel Mystery Oil for a few days, keep them full. I have seen this help many cars.

I think you diagnosed the problem 79Mercy.

I tried mine with the valve cover off , timing was dead on no chain stretch, feeler guage on the valves still lots of smoke and no start same as your describing with yours Daw

I sprayed WD40 and no difference . Last ditch effort was ..........Hope I can say this ...ether ! No difference not even a change in crank speed. Has to be compression.

I just wonder if they do start will they get better ?

Was the 240 running Or was it sitting up for a long time ? Did you ever get the 116 to stay running ?

I got the w116 to start 3 times last fall; ran it for about 1.5 minutes. Nothing since then.

The 240 almost started on the first attempt; then nothing else until the last attempt when I had the owner crank the starter for like 30seconds. I didn't want to burn up the starter. The 240 is "tempting" me.

Glad I just read over the "MB obsession" thread --- yes, I'm pretty sure I have it, since I just posted over on the Vintage Discussion about a fintail in Jacksonville, FL for sale.

Thats why I asked.

The 116 I found is "tempting me"

Is it more a tempting feeling or just pure determination not to let it win and actually get it running ?
