IP timing Question - Negative 11 degrees

Ive been driving my 83 300sd for about 6 months now.. I've adjusted valves etc (all the usual stuff) However I recently got the A/C working - I have very little power at take off. I decided to check the IP timing and see if it was close to correct.

I used the bubble method and Im getting bubble cut off at (negative)-11 degrees. (I know this method is not too accurate - but its best I can do right now)
Could that even be possible????

I've rotated around twice just to be sure - everything I've read on here says I should be getting very few or no bubbles at 24/25/26 BTDC ....

Now 6 months ago I did put a used IP on because the previous one was clogged with veg oil and I could never get number one to pump...

Could I have installed the ip off that much and it would still run???

Thanks in advance - I couldnt have done all Ive done without this forum.

By "-11" do you mean 11 degrees ATDC? Or 11 degrees retarded from specification?

I don't know for sure about the OM617, but the first 6.9 IDI Ford I bought was 180 degrees out of time - and it still ran!

Took a shot of ether to get it started, it smoked like a mosquito fogger, and it barely had enough power to get up to 60 mph (with your foot on the floor on level ground), but it still ran. I drove it home like that.

Based on that experience and how similar the two engines are in terms of construction and principles of operation, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I'll bet an OM617 would run at 11* atdc...

I fixed it in the heat!

Timing issue fixed!! Took the IP out - I hate those bolts on the shutoff valve!! - but its done. I can now do the whole thing in less than an hour... She starts on the first 2 seconds of cranking now!!

Wow does it have some power.. Even with A/C on...
No more smoke at idle!!!! No more engine shake.!!!

Just to review what I did : in 104 Texas heat!! mind you.

The IP was removed and was turned to the index mark and the timing chain / engine was put at 24 btdc and the IP reinstalled - I did notice that the index marks on the cam didnt line up exactly - A little chain stretch I guess -

Now its time to:

Check and adjust valves but that can wait for a cooler day!

Get the horns working and get her inspected.. Ive been "ridin dirty" for two months now.. I would have failed here in Texas for the 'visible smoke"
