How To Re-Set Odometer Reading ???

I just got another speedometer. I would like to change the mileage to what my car has. Any easy way or links to see how it is done?

I just modified mine. It used to say 216k, now it says 316k.

One of the previous owners rolled it back 100k. I want it to read the correct miles.

Once you get the cluster out, you will see that there are small star wheels that are on a small long pin that goes the length of the odometer. You can't turn the numbered wheels until these are moved out of the way. I used a small pin of some sort to push the long pin out of the housing. I may have had to remove some stuff on the opposite side to give it space to move out of. I only pushed it enough so that the end came out and it relieved pressure on the numbered wheels.

Sorry, I did not take pictures.

It's easy if you want to change the first digit but it can be a disaster if you try the other numbers. I found out the hard way when I tried fixing a slipping odometer.

This is for resetting donor speedos to match the original. Changing the odometer reading without notifying the DMV and engraving the door pillar with the appropriate info is illegal.

On the star wheel shaft there is a crushed section.

Use some strong pliers to recrush it from the opposite direction so the shaft is round again. Push the shaft out and be careful not to lose any stars. Set the numbers where you want, insert the shaft and add each star as you go along. Watch out for alignment or you'll get a number stuck 1/2 way. Once its out, use those pliers to crush the shaft again so it cant work its way out.

This is much easier than trying to mess with the number wheel shaft. I used this method to reset my 300D's odometer to zero since the last known accurate mileage was recorded over a decade ago.

The SD cluster looks different. There is no crushed shaft and the immediate housing is plastic.

This is one of the reasons I always take low mileage MBZ with a big grain of salt. It is too easy to fiddle with the odometer.

Smile

Thanks everyone. I turned it ahead by using a very small screw driver and prying on the teeth on the number rings. Had some trouble taking plastic ends off ( brittle ) so I pryed it.
