BMW diesel

I drove a BMW 335d and must say I was impressed with the getty-up. It makes my 87' 300d turbo look puny by comparison. I'm thinking of getting a Euro Delivery but a few things are holding me back. Other than price, the idea of an all aluminum engine and the electronics suggests trouble down the road. My take is that the Germans are not electronics savy but really excel in mechanical engineering. But it runs like a bat....

Incredible Automobile

However,
If a Factory (Bayerische Motoren Werke) extended warranty is not available, make
arrangements to have completed the resale of the vehicle (Out of Your Hands)
AND THE TITLE TRANSFERRED.
BY: THE DAY BEFORE THE FACTORY WARRANTY RUNS OUT!

I will have to disagree with you, I was not impressed at all. It did have plenty of power, and that was nice, but the engine was too rough. My old SDL was smoother, and I think the suspension felt better too. My biggest problems is the transmission, you let off the go pedal, and the car jurked and started slowing very quickly (see no worthwhile coasting). The fact that they WON'T option a manual transmission...I'm out!

I am pretty confident that people have been beating the tar out of this car, you could just tell. It was at a dealer selling for "new" with a few k miles on it, but you could tell it was driven a lot. I would be willing to give another a try, but I am not in any kind of hurry.

I've never liked BMW's sequential turbo system. Its far too complicated with too many (expensive) possible failure points. I can see having an issue with one turbo or a diverter valve and being told by BMW to replace the entire assembly.

They should have stuck with the simple and reliable VNT.

I agree. I don't see what the point of two is if they are just doing the same job as one.

Is that urea injection bottle plastic? Sitting a few inches away from the exhaust..lol. nm: it has a metal shield cut out for display

I hope it sells well enough for them to keep one or two diesel models available, but I plan on sticking with MB myself..

The aluminum engine doesn't scare me, if it's done correctly. An example is Porsche's glass-fiber reinforced aluminum case, ... well done Mahle.

I don't know about 335d but I always liked diesel Beemers. They are usually so quiet and smooth, even the older ones. A lot of HP/liter too. My friends have '99 730d and I think it has almost 200HP, very nice and smooth ride. I know it's hard to beat SDL but some BMW's in this class are even nicer and they offer manual transmissions

But wouldn't you do this for any new car these days?

Quite so!

The 330D has well known issues here in Europe with the Turbo and with the inlet-flaps falling off in the inlet-manifold, being injested by the cylinder and literally destroying the entire engine. Bloody hideous things!

14 grand (Dollars equiv) to replace the engine when That happens!--Nah, You can keep your 'modern' BMW rubbish!

Guess the 335D be much the same

Give me an E38 any day! I would probably give my left nut for one in good condition with a diesel!

Isn't the BMW 535d the winner of some award multiple years? Very nice technology indeed and hopefully free of future gremlins.

What do you mean by rough? As in shaking too much or just sounding rough? Maybe you're just not used to the sound of a directly-injected diesel. Personally I haven't driven this BMW or listened to its engine, but some DI diesels do sound somewhat harsher than the last IDI diesels, even if overall they're not any louder. I really like the sound of the Bluetecs though and I think they're like a much quieter version of a UPS truck.

Hell no. My impression is that most new cars today are reasonably reliable and extended warranties are almost always a waste of money. However, this particular engine does utilize some new and somewhat unproven technology where an extended warranty might make sense. Even better though is to wait a year or two and let them work out the bugs, then forget about the extended warranty.
