What my Hood and Trunk lid material? Steel or Aluminum?

Recently I have been noticing that my Trunk Lid and Hood seem to be very light in weight and I don't have a magnet to test the material. Are there body parts made out of aluminum on these 1982 300S D's?

Just sort of curious from what I have noticed but I wasn't sure.

These two parts sure feel light.

Mercedes stated reason for this at the cars' introduction was: lighter weight=more MPG.

Its easy to confirm on any car using a magnet! A magnet is your best friend if you especially need to confirm ferrous or non-ferrous metals and/or the amount of Bondo used "creatively" on a classic car! Radio Shack sells magnets for science projects....

Interesting, so SDL's can rust easier. Due to stone chips and stuff....I have a whole flaked off bit of paint on my hood by the grille (on the sides) from stones....no rust!

I have a steel hood on my SD as my original was wasted when I bought it. One downside of the aluminum hoods is they like to crack at the back of the hinge. I have seen a few of them that way.

Someone must have swapped mine out as I am starting to get a bit of rust on some of the little chips and scratches. Will have to touch that up this summer.
