I think this is due to the cat. converters on new diesels.

I like the old diesel smell too. It smells like work is being done. I guess it reminds me of heavy equipment.

My 84 has this smell. Now that the 87 has a cat on it, it's got the weird new bleach smell you mentioned, especially after it's warmed up. Makes me want to have that thing removed. Just never have the time to take it in.

Maybe my sinuses are shot, but I can't tell much of a difference between the F250 and the 300TD when running on diesel. They do have a different smell between them when on veg though or maybe I'm just nuts.

Love the smell of a compression ignition engine! Old, new, clean, dirty, big, small, whatever! The scent around aircraft is bliss too! Mmmmm, Jet-A. Our forced air heater in the shop has that touch when its burnin Kero, diesel in it is strong and makes the eyes burn! I also agree on the smell of old spark engines!

I've been a racer since 8ish and theres some good smells at the track too! Love the smell of race gas, my Malibu and our Nova smell yummy on Sunoco and VP-115! If theres any other racers here, VP's Oxiginated race gas (think race fuel w/ nitrous built in) smells very odd raw or burnt, but good too! Our sold Pro-mod and in its previous life were as alcohol/methanol burners, Mmmm. But cant beat the smell of Nitromethane! Ahhhh, a feast for the lungs! I even can enjoy a nother great spin off of it at home, My Nitro burning R/C trucks, course also methanol and castor oil burnin too! But still a bouquet for the nostrils!

If its not apparent, im a born-raised gearhead, been around cars since birth and workin on them since i could hold tools! Cars/mechanical work is my livlyhood. I have a keen sense of smell for exhaust and its origins and how its running. I can smell an engine running rich, lean, burning oil, coolant, incomplete combustion, etc!

Yes.....I know, im nuts

Skippy~ As for perception: Drive what you like and can afford. Those who don't like it can supply vacuum to one of your components. LOL

If you need parts, I have some!

I think that has a lot to do with it, I grew up tinkering with boat, truck and 'Vette engines with my father and a lot of it just brings back those memories.

I went to the Nitro Nationals in Epping, NH about 15 years ago and I can still remember the perfume of burnt Nitromethane!
