I eventually got my head around the fitting of the belts and the job is now done.
Thanks to Geof a.k.a pizzachef I would have really struggled without the pdf he emailed me with the tightening and loosening sequence. I do have a major concern as to how close the fan/ water pump belt is getting to the adjusting nut. There is very, very little clearnence here and I am worried that the belt will catch and snap again??? Any advice here??? |

You are in VERMONT. Your R12 should have been taken out of your car and shipped to TEXAS long ago.

I ended up grinding the end off the adjusting nut (it had already had a nut welded to the threaded bar that was too big so I welded a nut on the right size so that it would not stick out. Sorted.

I have a similar problem. I have a 79 240D and I need to replace the condenser belt. A friend of mine did the other 2 belts for me. At the time the A/C wasn't working and the part company sent him the wrong belt, so he said he would do it for me when we fixed the a/c. Now I want to do it myself because I fixed the a/c. the system is updated to R134a, does that make a difference? I would be interested in getting that pdf of the pivot points.

its all in there, i now just need a crow bar to adjust the tension on the compressor belt. Apparently, mercedes thought it was only a good idea to put a tensioner bolt on some of the pulleys...

Did you look at the Maintenance Manual it linked to?
Here is the section on adjusting the belts. http://mercedes.thatchermathias.com/Index/616/13AccessoryBelt.htm You DON`T need a pry bar. Charlie

Lots of info here, some accurate, some not. It'll be difficult to find a DIY that covers all the belts, so try searching for DIYs on each component: P/S pump, A/C compressor and alternator. You'll probably find good pics for each one that will help.
The parts may have 4 bolts that need loosened in order to get the parts to move. For example, look at the pic in post 2 in this thread: Installing a CompressorWorks R4 into a W123 The P/S pump "pivots" on the upper inboard bolt, slides on the lower inboard and outboard bolts (so these 3 bolts lock it in place) and there's a tensioning bolt upper outboard (that helps you adjust the tension ONLY when the other 3 are loose). The R-4 A/C compressor is similar in layout. Don't know about the York. The alternator is a little different and there are various threads on the tensioner. It has a bracket that needs to pivot (upper inboard), a bolt on the alternator that needs to pivot (lower, through the alternator) and a tensioner that needs to slide that may/may not have a 90 degree bolt that is probably stripped or bent from misuse. |
