I have studded snows all around and carry three 60# bags of sand in the trunk for ballast, my 79 240D handles very nice in snow.

I do similiar with my 300D- was even questioned if it was a 4matic or all wheel drive once. wonder if there is any way of doing that, hmmm...

One must have the right tires AND weight in the right places for your application, period. Especially the further that rear end gets from the front as in SDLang

Walking isn't a lost art: one must, by some means, get to the garage.

I do not like these in the snow. Even with studded tires on the rear, and 80lbs in the back. They just seem to slide around. They do not plow the roads around here, so if it gets very deep, you are stuck for good.

My 190d doesn't really like loose or wet surfaces. Last time I tried to drive in snow/ice, I couldn't. With a heavy lpg tank in the place of the spare tire, topped with fuel and 3 adults in the rear as soon as I started gently lifting the clutch the rear tires would start spinning, that's without even touching the throttle and with snow tires (http://i-m.com.ua/pic/s/sava.eskimos3.jpg). Not really fun . Otherwise we don't get snow here in Tirana, thanks God .

I'm out on the Olympic Peninsula so its not that I've had allot of experience in the snow, but I think you need studded all around and more like 150=200 lbs for ballast. Like I said I'm no expert on snow but my 240D handles very well.

Nokia snows all around with 100# of sand up against the fuel tank and a 50# cement wheel weight in each fender well and the 82 does fine in most snow conditions but it struggles up my short steep driveway when it has 4 or more inches of snow on, same issue climbing the long steep hill coming back home to my driveway . When it gets like it is today with 12" of snow so far and more to come we use the Cummins.
On snowy pavement though the MB is a "gas" to drive because it is so predictable it is smoothly responsive when traction issues require finessed throttle

Studs all of the way around are a waste on RWD cars, my opinion. Guess I will try increasing the balast weight. With an extra 200 lbs, what does that do the the mpg?
Car definately seems front heavy on slcik roads.

coachgeo -- really glad you said "most folk"...cause them there is fightin words if you group all owners of 4WD's together - not to mention the trouble caused if you consider all 4WD's to be equal!

There are many differances, and actually only a few meet the standards -- And yes...I'm a loyal owner and supporter of Land Rover! The absolute best 4x4xFAR!

blackestate: I average 23-25 mpg weighted or not. Vermont roads are hard on fuel mileage at the best of times. My best warm weather mpg has been 28
