Does a 1985 300sd really give 35+ mpg???
Could it be someone is lying to get more money for their car? Seems to me these cars only give about 26-28 mpg?

Add says 20-30mpg. Sounds about right. Might be stretching it on the million mile part though.

A 300SD gets about 19-30 mpg depending on driving conditions. Most of the time they get around 23-25ish.
Engine will last MAYBE 400-450,000 if very well maintained.

It could, but your talking some serious modifications and economical driving skills. I would believe 30 since that is what I get on the motorway around here with a 50/50 blend of biodiesel and regular diesel.

Yes, they can get that high---down hill with a tail wind, in nuetral and idling. Other wise expect mid to upper 20's.

The only time saw 30mpg on my 1981 was when it was being towed
![]() I averaged 24.6 combined city and highway driving on an 84 mile commute (one way) The SDL gets 27+ on the same route...

I tend to take these reported numbers with a grain of salt especially if they are calculated using the mileage of the car's own speedo (and not a GPS etc). There's just quite a bit of variables like if the correct tire size is being used (and even worn out correct tire ain't correct any more). Another can of worms is topping up with fuel (it is not always filled up to the same level?) before zeroing the trip meter. So I am just saying that making comparisons is kinda hard (especially given different climates, driving habits, fuels etc). Of course, improving one's own readings is definitely cool (and quite real).

to all:
i have a HEAVY foot (my usual "road speed" is about 75-80MPH on the interstate) & just returned from a >3K trip (2 weeks ago) in a '85 300SD with well over 300K on the clock. we got 29.9MPG on the trip, so i'd guess that with REALLY careful driving that you COULD get 35MPG. otoh, i don't have the patience to do it! nearly 30MPG works for me. yours, texasnative46 |
