w124 300D Torque Converter Stall Speed

Does anybody know what is the stall speed of the torque converter from a 1987 300D with a 603.960 engine and I think a 722.317 transmission?

Would this torque converter fit on a 617.95x motor and 722.3xx combo?

Not sure of the factory spec, but I know on our old 87 300TD, I could keep the throttle feathered at just about 2k rpm and the trans would shift without disturbing the rpm. Felt like a CVT trans.... Based on this observation, I'd guess the stall speed is around 2k.

The bellhousing bolts are a different pattern, but that doesn't really answer your question. Sorry...

Easiest way to tell is floor it with the brakes on, read the tach. I tried this once on my '87, still have the black marks on the garage floor to prove it, ... kind of surprised me. Probably works better on cement that isn't troweled smooth.

I've just checked my 1987 manual collection with no success for the 1987 300D Turbo. A transmission manual is probably what you want.

The 1985 "Introduction into service" manual mentions for the 1985 300D-T (W123, OM617) and 1985 300SD (W126, OM617) that a higher stall speed torque converter is used for the 1985 model year. The new torque converter has a stall speed, they say, of "approximately" 2600 RPM. This means that the previous one had a lower stall speed but they do not give a number.

From M-Shop member Shorebilly- What is the difference between an 84 300SD tranny and an 85?

There is mention of different Torque Converters......
126 (USA) starting 1983 have a stall speed of 1450 - 1650
126 (USA California) starting 1985 have a stall speed of 2400 - 2700

There are a couple of footnotes relating to the various testing of National Versions.....

I probably need a manual, but figured that someone here might have that info. Thanks for looking.
