Lucky.......
Being back in the USA for a short period, I felt obliged to do a little work on the Grey Ghost. I've known for sometime that the injection pump was shot and I happened to have a fresh replacement. Soooo.. just to make life difficult I decide to do all the work in the driveway, without pulling the oil filter housing, with the goal of not having to time the IP afterward.
After much swearing, skinned knuckles and scraped up arms I line up the spline on the new IP with the old one and slip it back in as close to the same position as the old one as I can. If anything it's a bit advanced. So I think to myself "There's no dying way this is gonna start, and even if it does it won't run well." Low and behold it fires on the first crank, has great smokeless power and seems to be slightly advanced as anticipated. Shaky idle is gone and my tired old engine (300k) feels young again. Needless to say I know I got lucky.
