Take a look at the camshaft itself and attempt to determine if it's sitting forward of the desired position in the bearings. The cam usually moves rearward.........by itself.........until the thrust washer stops the movement. However, if something has hung the camshaft and is preventing it from moving to the desired position.........that's your issue. |

BC.. take a look at the photos an then the diagram above. Notice the lip and recess from the front of the camshaft. The keyhole on the camshaft goes all the way through.
If, however, the OP has marked the camshaft sprocket before dismantle, and has his/ her mark showing on the side that he / she made it, then I agree. - it is not wrong. |

one way to determine the original position (if the washers and sprocket are the original) is to remove the sprocket again, and look very closely a the markings on the rear spacer/ washer and the surfaces of the sprocket, it should be determinable from highlights and varnish. Did you take any pictures before you dissassembled?

oh yeah!
i just flipped the cam sprocket, and now everything's lining up!
jt20 + steveo- rockin' observation, thanks. i should have mentioned it earlier, but the plastic rail was broken when i first removed the head and marked the chain to the sprocket several months ago. i wonder if the PO had installed her wrong... thanks SO much, guys! and for all you archive readers: learn from my mistake , and don't take anything for granted: cam sprocket goes thin lip front / stamped writing back.

We could have solved this problem without all the grief if you simply provided correct information and not offered up complete misstatements of fact in the thread. When you state that you "double checked the sprocket" and "the line-up mark is facing the right way", what are we to believe? The data provided turned into sheer fantasy............ Without correct data, the forum becomes useless to everybody. |
