Hi

The impellors break for no reason. See pic in attached thread. 99 E300td water pump replacement If you take off the thermostat you can feel in with your finger if the impellor is spinning when you spoke the waterpump pulley round.

All fans are on. I'll try the rolled-up newspaper test tonight to see if the clutch is engaging properly.

Last night I tried to unplug the electric recirculating pump, but I must have broken into the connector in the wrong place, since it wasn't obvious how it unplugged. The photo of the pump in Fastlane gives me a better idea.

Thanks for your help, I'll provide an update tonight.

McCool, I don't see the link to the thread, could you re-post?
thanks,

EDIT: I think I found it:

Check the engine mounts too. If they are compressed, the engine can be sitting too low. This changes the spacing of the fan to radiator.

Conclusion

Hello,

Here's the conclusion to my overheating problem:

Water pump impeller was broken. This is the plastic version that McCool showed in his post on 8/19/08. The new version is cast aluminum and will hopefully last the life of the car.

I removed the thermostat and could spin the broken halves of the impeller with my hands. Just to be sure, I tested the thermostat by placing it in water and heating it on the stove. At ~80 C, it opened up as expected.

thanks everyone for your help
Paul

Hi

Great you got it sorted and glad to have been of help. It is a common enough problem with 605/606 engines of that vintage.
