I have found a 300SD in the boneyard, when the guy drove it in he said it would start and run 4-5 miles and the you would have to sit for 1/2 hour and it would do it again. Any way I'm looking to put a diesel in my Bronco just like the title says. Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.
Thanks, Tim |

Only problem with that motor might not have enough to move the car, it will be slow imho.
Broncos usually have a v8 or v6 in them for reason....

He states a '66, the original, compact Bronco. These are my favorite years. They came from the factory with inline 6 cylinders of the 170 or 200+ variety. My old 200 had 115 screaming HP.
I think performance would be similar to a stock 200, probably more torque. Biggest challenge would be to adapt the tranny and x-fer case. Tim, what year 300SD? If it has the OM 603 engine I would think that would be a great swap.

the 617 turbo should provide very nice performance in the bronco I, but you will have to drive fast to stay ahead of the rust!
The problem with the car sounds like a fuel problem such as bacteria in the tank. Tom W

The good thing is that the old Broncos are fairly light. Like the IH Scout they were based on, the original engine was a 4 banger. [I6 and V8 engines came much later] The bad thing is that the bell housing and all the internals [clutch or torque converter] are most unlikely to be compatible out of the box. I recall that Advance Adapters might be a source for oddball conversion stuff for Broncos.
For what it's worth, sitting next to the house are Miss Moose, [a purple and black 1971 Bronco, with a small block V8 from a 1986 Mustang GT] and the pieces of about one and a half other Broncos. One of these days I'll get around to putting things back together. Quote:

My roommate's dad has a 1960s Ford Bronco that he wants to put a 5 cylinder turbo diesel engine in, so we would be interested in seeing the engine swap if you go ahead with it. Right now I am installing a 5 cylinder turbo diesel engine in an older 1967 Mercedes. This engine has been put in a lot of vehicle types, but there is the challenge of getting it to to bolt up to the transmission, and the oil tower always seems to be in the way. Finding the proper flywheel/clutch setup can be very difficult.

Do a search on MERCEDESROVER or his web site www.seriestrek.com .
he is putting a 617 into a Range Rover, and made different adapter plates for the various hurdles he has had to jump through. Charlie

Glad to see the interest, the Early Broncos(66-77) were about 4000lbs so I think the motor will be just right. The question I haven't asked yet is does the transmission have a removable tailstock? if so I was thinking about taking that off build a shaft that will accept the D-20 transfer case adapt the two together there. Advance adapters makes adapters for the 4bt cummins, but as far as I know no one has ever done this. I like how much quieter the Mercedes is than the 4bt.

Tim, I don't think the MB tranny's have a tailstock at all since they have a 2 piece driveshaft with a flex disk on both ends and a U-joint in the middle supported by a bearing block. You might be able to use the original MB trans connected to a divorced t-case by a short custom shaft.

These are definitely some of the questions I'm trying to answer before I get to where I'm spending money. The length of the transmission to motor mounts in the Bronco is 39 1/2", this is a dimension I'm looking for. The closer I can get the two these mounted the better. One of the obstacles is I only have a 92" wheelbase, so keeping it short is important, not have the car here I can't get all of the dimensions I want, but I should have it home soon. Looks like a cool link.
Thanks, Tim ![]() |

So I'm thinking I can have an input shaft from the D-20 made that will mate up to the flex disc. Then I will just have to attach the two with some brackets.

Fwiw . . .
I saw a guy trying to sell a 2000 Chevy Silverado (like mine) with an 85 Diesel Turbo in it. ran and drove well but no 4WD. some mechanic with too much time on his hands and an extra MB engine.
