Dielectric/transformer oil for fuel?

I have 110 gallons of EDM 244 oil at work that is ready for disposal. It is a dielectric/transformer oil. I pulled the MSDS sheet and it says "paraffinic hydrocarbon". The specifics are boiling point 489-523 degrees Fahrenheit, specific gravity 0.770, flash point 239 degrees Fahrenheit, and auto-ignition temperature 392 degrees Fahrenheit. Does this sound like it might work as a fuel?

IIRC, that stuff is pretty toxic. I would not use it personally.

Just because the engine can run on a large variety of oils does not mean people should be pouring every hydrocarbon-based liquid they come across into the fuel tank.

Probably what your recalling is the days it contained PCB's. That ceased in 1977 to be the case (in the USA anywa), however... fair warning... many closed capacitors and transformers still do contain oil contaminated with PCB's. Most newer manufactured ones do not and most newly manufactured oil does not but it can and will pick it up if its passed through a contaminated older transformer or was taken out of such a transformer in the first place.

Yea... it will burn. It is basically a mineral oil more or less. Not sure what other additives it may have that might not be good to burn in a Diesel motor and I am fairly certain its not an approved road fuel.

Been there, done that, would do it again in a heartbeat.. as long as you KNOW and can CONFIRM that it was not produced before 1977 (PCBs and all). It would also be good to know what type of transformer it came out of (produced in the US versus a third world country).

Typically all it is, is highly refined mineral oil.

Contrary to the typical naysayers, it ran great!

For the machinists out there, this is EDM (electric discharge machining) dielectric fluid. It is relatively safe for humans (listed as hazardous material category 1) and is intended to be used by machinists and one would expect occasional hand contact with the fluid as it is being used. It is brand new, packaged in factory drums, and supplied with a machine purchased brand new in 1997.

Its a Charmilles sinker, and nobody uses it any more. It can probably be purchased for around $7,000 - it only has a couple hundred hours on it!

Ok, have to ask; what is a "Charmilles sinker"?

Edm toolmaker

Yea and the stuff we use in our sinker (a pair of form 20s) will burn readily when atomized.

Oh the bickering.

I would try it, but I have a deathwish for my Benz apparently with my WVO/Diesel blending. But I would probably blend it with diesel first.

Just make sure you can obtain an injection pump and injectors for about $550 because that is all you will save in favor of jeopardizing fuel system. If you can get more than 110 gallons, and it indeed runs without dying - you might fight off the dues.

One phrase keeps ringing in my little ear however: NO FREE LUNCH.

That being said *bipolar* Check this link.

What can't we burn in our diesels ???
I've been amazed lately at all the various
'alternatives' to diesel fuel that some of our
MB owners have been willing to run through
their diesel machines .. I guess it's a testament
to the versatility of these engines

So far, in no particular order, MB diesel owners
have tried the following fuels and or blends ..

diesel
aviation kerosene
kerosene
peanut oil
corn oil
canola oil
cootonseed oil
waste vegetable oils from fast food restaurants
hemp oil
waste engine oil
two stroke oil
home heating oil
jet A
jet B
CNC oil
used transformer oil
soybean oil
scented lamp oil
brake fluid
engine oil
small amounts of gasoline
automatic transmission fluid
rape seed oil
synthetic oil
dino oil
sunflower oil
Valvoline synthetic power steering fluid

Personally I can't wait until summer .. looking
forward to trying some "Coppertone" coconut oil in mine

Jim in Ct ..
