97 E300D Fuel Filler Cap/Neck issue

Hello everyone, I have recently started having trouble with my fuel cap (only 6 months old). It goes on ok with a nice click, but when I tried to remove it its stuck, it appears that the whole assembly is turning. I wrenched it off and went bought new cap on Friday. Same thing is happening with new cap. I did a search and saw that someone had a similiar but not exact issue. It looks like I am going to have to replace the whole tank. Any thoughts on cost, or other things I could try.

Thanks
Dennis

Guessing the flanges of the filler neck have become tweaked inward and need to be pulled back out.

Thanks I am hoping that can be repaired, a new tank I found out is about 720.00 plus labor!! The white part of the cap is definately turning when you turn cap counter clockwise to open, where it should be staying put and only the metal tabs should move back to the opening.. I am going to have to look into further, for the mean time I am going to pick up a cheap Stant or Gates to use. The MB Caps are getting expensive to just get torn up..

Compare!

Try to find a similar car ('96-99 E-class) and put them side by side so you can compare the filler necks. Something must have happened, as TMAllison says, to change the shape of the opening so that it is "eating" the caps. Once you can see the difference, you'll know what to fix.

Can you post a pic of your cap and filler neck? My '97 has a cap similar in fashion to the old MB's, 300D, etc.... Our '99 has more of a modern day twist and lock cap.
