Do you see the tensioner in front?

You can either use a rachet extension or that wheel centering tool MB provided in your tool kit. Stick it in the hole of the plastic bracket the holds the spring and damper. Undo the nut, think its 10mm, and slide the bolt back. Thats what the rachet extension or tool is for, to take the pressure off the bolt so you can slide it. Now that the belt is lose remove it and put your new belt on.

You can do it with the fan in place but its a PITA. The fan comes right out with an allen wrench, I think its 12mm. Than you have all the room in the world.

For routing the belt look at your owners manual, its probably in the back on page 1XX.

Hattie's showing some age The bolt that holds the upper spring holder takes a 13mm wrench, the bolt that holds the fan and clutch to the pulley takes an 8mm hex bit.

If you get a Goodyear Gatorback belt, the packaging sleeve has a belt routing diagram.

With the belt off, check the tensioner pulley. It should spin smoothly without a whirring sound, and not wobble about its axis. Likewise the tensioner arm should not click as you rotate it and it shouldn't wobble.

To loosen the 8mm Allen screw that holds the fan onto the water pump pulley, you have to hold the pulley still. The factory sells a special tool ($$$) and some people have made their own. I found it fairly easy to use the serpentine belt itself as a strap wrench around the pulley. I loosened the fan shroud and pushed it back so I could get at the front of the fan. There's enough room to get a standard L-shaped Allen wrench into the bolt and a length of steel pipe can be slipped over the long arm of the Allen for added leverage while you grip the serpentine belt tightly to keep the pulley from turning.

Once the bolt is loose, I kept the Allen wrench in place and turned the pulley to remove the bolt. The bolt can come off still in the fan and you remove the fan and the shroud together. The fan needs to be stored vertically while it is off the car. When you put the fan back, put a little blue Loc-Tite on the threads of the bolt.

Once the fan and shroud are out of the way you can easily remove the serpentine belt and install the new one.

Don't blame the poor boy.

He wasn't there when the mechanic changed the belt.

You realize that he has his own private mechanic.......right?

Its been 6 months since I had them apart!

I had a Gates on their for awhile, but now I am running a Conti that I had in my spare parts bin. Next is a Bando. When I got this car I kept ordering belts for some reason!

I didn't have too much trouble fitting the belt with the fan in place. The tensioner design is great. I found it easier to get the belt in place on the tensioner and all the pulleys except for the power steering, then roll it onto the PS pulley.

Be sure to route the belt correctly. Don't make the same mistake I did and wrap the belt around the water pump pulley and then to the tensioner.
