Chain Chain Chain...
I have just bought a 1992 E300D 2.5 Turbo with 190,000 miles and she's lovely! Now the fun begins. I expect it will be a long love affair. (Keep her a long time)
I know the original owner and have all reciepts from the last 11 yrs. Engine has nver been opened. Should I replace the timing chain? No unusual noise or symptoms. Loving this car and loving this forum. JD |

No, but do check the timing or have your new MBz mechanic do it. It might tell if there is wear in the chains.

How does it run? Whats your MPG? You can check for chain stretch. See if it's worn. If its not worn let it be. You can replace it if you want piece of mind. From what I've read the replacement chains are just OK.

The OM606 in my '96 E300D has 252,000 miles on the original chain; the OM617 in my '85 300D-T has 230,000 miles on the original chain. Most I would do would be to check the chain for stretch. Don't know if your engine can be shimmed to take up cam chain slack, also don't know if it has a single-row or double-row chain. The single-row chains tend to stretch more (fewer miles). If the chain is worn and stretched and can't be adjusted to compensate, then yes, change it.
Bobo's comment is well said: replacement parts are not always as well made as the originals. Additionally, there are a lot of things that can go wrong while replacing the timing chain. Not worth the risk until it's necessary. If the engine has always had clean oil, the chain is unlikely to just up and break by itself. If the chain and the sprockets are so worn that the chain is getting ready to skip a tooth, yes, then you have a breakage risk, but the performance of the engine would have been affected long before because the cam timing would be so far off due to the wear. Welcome to the forum, JD. And congrats on the new car!
Check the chain stretch, there was a TSB about this (click here to see the PDF file) due to a run of bad chains in the early 90's. If your chain stretch is 4° or more, replace it. If less, forget it. Cam timing is not adjustable by shims or by offset keys. A new chain will zero the timing if necessary. My 1993 300D was about 8° stretched when I got it, so I rolled in a new chain. After the new chain is installed, then check and adjust IP timing (set to 14°). BTW, as a new 124 diesel owner, you might want to read this article. Although it's written for the 1987 300D/TD, the majority of the information also applies to the 1990-1993 300D also. |
