What oil should I put in there and is the pump not oiled from the crankcase??

I also have a US market 1977 240D and the German car is way way more responsive. The intake manifold casting is different and the IP is different. Anyone have a comment on this finding as to much better acceleration??
Wher I used to work we used to use 40wt Engine Oil only in the Fuel Injection Pump.

How do you draining the Old Oil out? I have read some have no drain Plug and you need to get thin tube down there and suck out the Old Oil with the Tube attached to a Turkey Basting type Syringe. They also used to sell large Medical Syringes with a needle for injecting liquids into meat.

If these pumps have Pneumatic Governors perhaps the Diahragm on one is stiffer than the other. Someone commented that the Diaphragm is made of Goat Skin.

I don't know what it takes to tune one or change the Rack adjustment. there is shims inside of the Governor and also the Shaft on the Fuel Injection pump has been known to develop a Vacuum Leak.

Except during that time period it was not common to use multiviscosity Oils in Cars.
Also since the Fuel Injection Pump Oil is not connected to the Engine that also means it is not connected to the Oil Cooler.

This is CRITICAL

The IPs on the OM636, 621 and 615 (your 220D) ALL require a yearly/10K miles replacement of the oil inside the IP.

I have seen this done two ways:

1. Suck everything out the top hole using any suction device, as a minimum (in the manual) and add new oil (see below).

2. Tip from old German mechanic: Fill with thin mineral oil (not vegetable oil), bubble the oil inside the pump with a compressor just to loosen any clobs of crud that were in it, then suck it all out and replace with HD SAE 30 oil.

I got the info on the oil grade from the OM 621 maintenance manual I bought from a dealer. I notice it says to do this for all previous IPs (OM636) which are NOT force-lubed by the engine lube system.

I have done this in the past on my 636 and 621 IPs and you would be amazed at the crap you pull out.

I left it bubbling at 30 psi until the 80 gallon tank ran out and man, what crud!

Second shot was much cleaner, third shot was very clean.

You will hear less noise and get maybe some smoother operation from the pump. Just like when you do a purge of the power steering system and the steering is smoother and more responsive.

Hope this helps.
