Do I have the wrong cover on my air filter?

Hello, I just got a 1981 240d. My air filter cover has 2 holes in the top of it with no hoses going anywhere from it like I've seen in pictures on this site. But I'm thinking I should have a solid cover. Am I right? Is it going to hurt driving with this cover on it or should it be replaced? And what are the hoses for normally? Thanks, JEFF

The later (post 80) 240Ds dont have a vacuum hose to the air cleaner, your right. I would make a trip to the wrecking yard and plug the holes in the meantime.
