What Makes That Distinctive Diesel Sound?

Why do our cars sound like they do?

No plugs means pistons squeeze till the fuel explodes. That plus prechambers and cast iron blocks, heads all contributes to the famous and forever loved diesel sound.

So what we hear is the echo of the combustion?

It's a nice, solid sound that I've always loved. I used to drive tractors and heavy machinery on a farm and in construction, and I love the powerful sound of diesels. I have no idea why they sound like that, though.

Thumbs up If there was room, there'd be an '81 300D W123 manual in my garage!

I just love the sound of them. If there was ever a sound of strength, dependability and durability, that's surely it, a Mercedes Benz diesel engine.

Not everyone thinks so. "Automobile" magazine, I think it was described the sound of a Reagan era 1982 300SD as "clacking like a basket of castanets, as it crawls on its hands and knees to 60 mph"

We're gonna have about 25 of 'em together on the Northern California spring Diesel drive, next month. That will be REALLY cool.

1970 220D & 1980 300SD
the 220D is the loudest of my 2 cars, pulling in to a gas station every body turns around to see wait in the hell is making all that noise, I love it.

The sound is actually the explosion from the spontaneous combustion, heard through the block, head, and exhaust.

Sounds like power to me! (Except for the Ford rattlejoke)

Why am I not seeing an advertisement right now, at the bottom of this page for Mercedes Benz Diesel cell phone Ringtones?

i always thought the diesel sounded manly... don't ask me. but sound for sound. i think the diesel sounds more powerful then the big block in my Charger...

The 1.5L in my Toyota with a Cherry Bomb on it sounds powerful, or should i say just as powerful as the Charger. but we all know its not.

the sound of power is all an illusion. but, that said. something about the diesel sound makes me think power, i think its in my genetics like the sound of a stake on a fire makes me hungry.

the Mercedes diesel specifically has its own sound. I've been in crowded parking lots and i can hear a Mercedes diesel from hundreds of yards away.

when i got my 240D i was in love. mainly because the 4 cylinder sounds exactly like the 4 cylinder in my dads John Deere. and you know what the say "Nothing runs like a Deere"

suppose thats true because nothing runs on the 240 anymore.

Flame front vs shock wave

Spark ignition begins at one point and moves out at (relatively) constant speed. Compression ignition starts, well, where ever there is fuel.

Perhaps better said in other words??

From what Ive heard, these engines make 3 sounds when running.

-The diesel clatter at idle. Doesn't do much for me, but I don't mind it at all. And it really is a distinctive clatter, just like a cummins has its own special clatter. I'm not sure but I think the clatter is caused by the fuels forceful explosion actauly pinging on the cylinder walls

-The deep, thumping noise. You know, the noise of the diesel. Love it. I guess its probably the exhaust

-The subtle "spritzing" (or tapping) noise. Im guessing its combustion, but I like to think of it as injectors spritzing fuel into the cylinders, even though theres no way that is actauly loud

The sound of my diesel just reminds me of power, reliablilty, and the fact that if the world blows up I can drive anywhere on strained cow fat
