You know what bothers me about winter forecasts?

In my area, if a light dusting of snow is predicted, the grocery stores and hardware stores look like they've been looted. Everyone goes into a panic/survival mode and the roads get even more congested. It also seems like everyone needs to be on their cell phones during these times too.

I can understand your feelings about sensationalism in the weather reports. Many people get crazy without the media pumping up the drama.

I know you didn't say 99% of people are idiots, I was just referring to the comment. I'm starting to believe that the belief that everyone is an idiot is erroneous, seeing as everybody says it. It puts itself into a bit of a contradiction. Either we are all idiots, or we all know better.

As for doing the extra step of calculating the windchill, there is no extra step for me as the weatherman does it. It is easier to dress according to a "temperature" than a temperature and wind speed. Sure, I might know what I need for 0F and 10MPH, but I might not know how to dress at -20F and 15mph.

I can tell you that an exposed pinky will hurt bad in minute or less at a (windchill) temperature of -70F, but I couldn't tell off the top of my head if it would at -30F and 40mph (which it would, since that equates to -70F). But you're right, I'd know it means it's damn cold out. Just not quite...

I guess my point, in a more concise manner is this:

It is much easier to remember one scale (Temperature) than to remember multiple mental tables (temp X and wind Y, temp Y and wind X, temp Z and wind B, etc.)

At the same time, I could see your frustration if for example you were sitting on the ground and said, "Man, it's cold" and someone were to reply, "No S*$#! That rock is 3F" when it reality it were 20F with a windchill of 3F.

I suppose you could look JUST at the windchill, but I can honestly say I have never seen the windchill given by itself in a forecast. It is always given with the air temperature (at somepoint).

Yes, maybe my problem doesn't lie with the media, perhaps it is the overreaction of people to what the media says. But what comes first, the chicken or the egg?

I've heard this phrase before: There's no such thing as a measure of cold. Only of heat. Celcius and Fahrenheit are purely measures of heat. Therefore there is no such thing as cold, but only the absence of heat.

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but how's that thought for chicken or egg?

According to physics, that statement is true! Heat is a measurement of the movement of atomic particles. All particles are in motion (think vibrating). The more so, the higher the kinetic energy which results in a higher temperature. The only place this would stop and have no ability to cause heat is when the temperature reached absolute zero (-273.5C). So anything above absolute zero does have energy and thus the ability to cause heat. (Heat is actually the transfer from one source to another)

Bundled-up white man, to nearly naked Indian: "Aren't you cold?"
Indian: "No, is your face cold?"
White man: "No."
Indian: "I'm all face!"

Let's hear it for vasoconstriction!

And bbeard, I never once said people that like the windchill were idiots, or anything about 99% of the people liking it. That was someone else's post trying to put words in my mouth which looks like it worked.
oooh oooh, it was my post that did the 99% of the people thing... but I was talking about 99% of TELEVISION viewers are idiots... nothing to do with general public...*( which would be a whole different number)

I'm just wondering, why do people live in parts of the world where it gets so cold? is there something special there that's worth it or so? does one make more money in the cold? are the girls better looking? government less corrupt? better water quality?
not car related, most non turbo diesels will start better in the cold because of the higher compression as we all know.

Because if we all moved to France, South Africa, Munich, and Tennessee it would be too crowded.

I can't speak for everyone, but I know I live here so I can complain about the weather!

Well why does anyone live anywhere? Don't the vast majority of people tend to stay in the general area (regionally) where they grew up? I don't mind the cold so much. Probably could get used to it being a bit warmer but I definitely couldn't live anywhere that there weren't four distinct seasons.

And to answer your questions...

Make more money in the cold? Ummm, I don't think so.

Are the girls better looking? Ummm, I would say yes. But I'm sure many would disagree.

Governemnt less corrupt? Isn't that an oxy-moron?

Better water quality? Well most of the water around here is frozen, so.... Wait a second, I wonder if the windchill has anything to do with it being frozen??

Non-turbos....can't answer, mine's a turbo.
