Where Can I Get Rear Metal Brake Lines for a W124?
Where can I get the rear metal brake lines for a W124? I got a 1987 300d (W124) and the metal part of the rear brake lines has a small leak over the differential. The front brakes work fine but I do not have any desire to drive a car with leaky brakes. I thought about going to a junkyard, but how much more expensive could new lines be? I figured that it would make sense to just get new lines. Also, should I go ahead and replace the front ones as a safety measure?

The dealer. Or possibly Phil/Roy here on fastlane.

* Take the damaged line out and match it up with a metric brake line at your local Napa or imported parts store. Normally I recommend the dealer or an MB specialist too, but this isn't that hard to match (and you can get the car finished on Sunday).
* Make sure the compression nuts are the correct diameter and thread pitch (a longer nut length won't make a difference), and make sure that the flares at each end are the correct type. Shouldn't be hard to match. You will need to do a little fit-bending since the repair section will just be a straight brake line.

Where are you located Drew? If you're in W. Michigan you can take one off of my parts car.

You can buy long sections from Autozoo and rent the tools to bend and flare it.
Check the section about the subframe, salt sits in the corners and rots them out. NFW would I consider used ones, its a waste of time.

I re-did the break lines on my 124 and ordered the pre-cut lines from the dealer for about $90 for all 3 (from the master cyl to the 3-way and to each wheel.) I did not think $90 was bad for having the right material/size/length lines. You will need a bender though, and some patients.

I just bought generic metal brake line for my 123 this weekend at Autozone. A 12 inch piece cost me about $2. They rent the tool - pipe bender - for free. Don't waste your money on lines from the dealer. $90 for 3 lines!! What a ripoff. Go to some auto parts store. Take your old line with you to match up the threads.

Could easily be a difference in the steel used, and in the plating material/thickness. Still, chances are it'll last longer than you drive the car.

They are so cheap that if they fail again I'll replace them. Maybe I'll go nuts and get stainless line the next time around.

Thanks for the help guys, looks like Autozone is the place!
I also updated my location. If they rust on me we have serious issues as road salts and rust on the bottom is unheard of down here. |
