Talking Marry a 'Brit'? OM617 into a Land Rover?

Has anyone ever considered putting their 5 Cyl. Turbo diesel into a Land Rover. I have a 97' Land Rover Discovery that looks and handles great. It runs good too but gets 13 MPG. My 85 300sd has 260K on it now and needs suspension work, diff swap and rear wheel bearings. The upholstery isn't great either.

The LR has a ZF automatic and I wouldn't begin to guess about adapters, mounts ETC. So, What do the senior members think? The power of the 4.0L V8 feels about the same at low end as the Benz, but the Benz has way more torque above 2500 rpm.

Am I only dreaming to think I could have the SUV and 28+ mpg?

You can get 28 if you drive slowly enough!

Low twenties is probably more like it.

There is a member here with the handle of mbrover or 240rover or such. He has a rover with the 616 and is building one with the 617 turbo. He can sell you adapter kits, I think.

If you do a search for rover you will find many posts from him, I think.

Yup!

And his website is www.seriestrek.com

I'm trying to shoehorn a 616 into an early Jeep, and I'm employing a few of his components in my own project.

I've considered the same thing Bob.

I had a '99 Disco, really liked that truck, but it would only get 17mpg. I bought a nice spare 603 with transmission in hopes I could find a nice clean '99 D1 or early '00 D2 (still had the diff lock 'till mid-'00) with slipped sleaves or something else terminal.

Building an adapter for the ZF transmission was my largest concern, also the ZF has some electronic controls talking to the body computer for shift points, not sure how that would work out. It would be easier with a more primitive transmission certainly, and with some knowledge of the body computer.

If you get to a do-able point, we need to do two of them at once!

Another issue I had was weight and weight distribution. The 603 has good power and a nice power curve, but is longer and heavier than the aluminum V-8 in the Disco. With the stock engine, the L-R is a perfect 50/50 weight distribution (I weighed mine, perfect with 1/2 tank), and the magnesium/aluminum body keeps the center of mass reasonably low for an "SUV" so it handles well on and off-road and can take a pretty good side-slope.

Again, seems that something like a Cherokee already is front-heavy and top-heavy, I didn't want to make the Disco into a Cherokee.

Keep me in the loop please, I need diesel SUV that's not overpowered with pathetic fuel mileage (a-la Toureg/Navigator/Suburban diesels et al).

In looking at a Mercedes trans out of the vehicle, it would not be hard to make an adapter to mount a transfer case on it. I'd have to take a more in depth look at how the output shaft is secured, if the nut holding the yoke on has anything to do with that or if it just holds the yoke on but otherwise it's pretty straightforward.
The engine weight is not far off from the Rover engine, that engine got pretty heavy by that time with all the extras they hung on it. With a full fuel tank you'd probably be just shy of 50/50 distribution, probably around 45front/55rear.

From reading through this thread and the links attached it appears a lack of power from the 617 meant a change to a 6.2l engine instead.

I've met the aforementioned mercedesrover and seen his work which can only be described as top notch!

We talked about the 617 Disco/Rangie option and he was quite adamant that both are simply be too heavy for the 617. Granted if you don't mind a slow truck (See my thread on the 300GD that I drove) it's not an issue. If you do need some performance then a 603 would be better but it would be a much harder conversion especially with the space limitations (I don't think it's ever been done before) One has to remember that it takes power to run the transfer case and all the other bits that wouldn't normally be on a RWD Mercedes. The Discovery V8 puts out around 180 HP....by the time it get's to the wheels your only working with 140 or so.

Here is another thread on the topic
617 into a Range Rover Classic...advice please.

The irony of this discussion is that, outside North America, Land Rover offers a factory diesel option. But I have no idea how it compares with the Mercedes diesel.

I've been looking into this swap in great detail for my 96 rover. I would love to stuff the 603 from my 87 into my disco, and although I have found a kit to do it, it still don't think there would be quite enough space front to rear. When I get my truck back I'm going to do some further measurements. If it's possible I might go for it. Else, I'm looking at one of the later 5 cyl.
