Engine code location?
Where can I find the engine code on the block of a om617 engine? I bought a long block for cheap and I'd like to figure out if it's turbo of what.
On another completely different topic, the first 617's that were turboed had their pistons fried right? Was it because of the hotter compressed air being pushed into the cylinders? If it was, than could an N/A om617 be turboed safely if it had a really effective intercooler/water injection set up installed? Just wondering... Thanks. |

Look on the left side, hear the back of the engine.

The engines also have large white stenciling on the front like "951", "952" etc, indicating a 617.951, etc. It might still be present under a layer of grease if it hasn't been cleaned off completely.

That's where I assumed it would be, but all I can read is:
617 016 0401 and on the driver's side of the block it reads: 617 011 09 01 But the only engine codes I read about are 617.9xx so I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if there is something I'm missing. o_O? |

Maybe that's the head number, not the engine number. Is there anything on the block below the #5 glowplug?

Well here's what I'm looking at. I didn't even see that plaque until right now when I took a brass brush to it. But it still doesn't have a 9xx suffix on the code anywhere.
Note: get the most expensive digital camera you can buy, otherwise it'll take 15 mins to get a decent close up picture.... Anyways, the bottom code on the plaque reads: 617 010 3802 and 80 crossed out and replaced with 88 above it with another code after: 644519 |

Looks to be a rebuilt engine. That tag isn't on original engines, only rebuilt/remanufactured engines. It is also from a 300TD.
