Single blade wiper (W124, 210) removal -- HOW?

I need to replace the wiper blade on my 210 car. Like the 124, it has a single blade wiper system. My 123 car is easy, the two wiper arms open up to 90 degrees from the windshield so you can get at the plastic clip that holds the assembly to the arm.

In the 124 and 210 cars (and others, I suppose) the single arm won't come that far away from the glass. It comes a few inches off of the glass and then snaps into place, so it will stay up to be serviced. I don't want to force it and break something but can't figure out how to release the clip so the assembly will come off of the arm.

The FSM just says "Remove wiper assembly (1) from arm." Clearly, this is something that everyone (except me) was born knowing how to do.

Once I have the assembly off of the arm, I should be able to get the new Bosch blades installed.

I've searched three forums including this one for a DIY. Somewhere I remember seeing pictures of the operation but can't find them tonight.

I just had my windshield replaced today and caught a glimpse of how mine was taken off. There is a cover towards the base of the arm, it seemed to just snap off. Once that is off, there is a hex bolt in there you take off (sorry, dont know the size). It didnt take him 2 minutes to do it, so I didnt get to see real good, but that was about the extent of it. Looked simple enough.

Yeah there is a little door you pop off, but its very brittle and easy to crack. So be careful they crack easy because of the sun damage, under it there is a hex bolt that lets you lift the arm up higher.

But if you got lucky like me there was an aftermarket blade already on there and can be removed without having to unbolt it by the hex bolt. The blade i had was a arco or something like that and you just pull the blade back lift the arm up a bit and its off.

The oem wiper has a stupid clip that youll have to remove the hex on the wiper arm to remove it.

Why remove the wiper arm to change the blade?

Blade holder is held to the shepard's crook of the arm (outmost point of arm) with a clip.

It's intuitive how it is removed. Been a bit since I've done one, but I recall it requires a rotational move to release.

I DON'T want to remove the arm. I want to remove the wiper assembly from the arm, so I can take the assembly to my bench and R&R the blade. Yes, I'm sure that removing the clip is "intuitive," I just lack intuition at the moment. It's gotta be easy, you just have to know what piece to push where.

The arm does a 180 degree bend at the end and comes back toward the wiper hub, and stops after about an inch of travel. Think about taking you index finger and curling it and you'll get the idea.

The wiper blade assembly snaps into this crook from the inside, and there is a locking tab that holds it in place. This lock will only move up or down in relation to the arm.

At this moment, without looking at the arm, I cannot recall if you have to lift up or push down....

On my 99 you would push the plastic tab at the end of the metal portion of the wiper arm down ~1/2", and then slide the entire blade portion of the wiper back to remove it. It is held by a "J" shape at the end of the metal part of the wiper arm.

Aftermarket junk!

My mechanic showed me on one of his cars...

Back at the house, I find that my car doesn't look like that. It has an aftermarket assembly on the arm. I'll probably have to remove the entire arm and study it on the workbench. I'll order a new assembly and get the car back to stock.

Thanks, everyone, for your advice.

Jeremy

Dam' aftermarket junk!

My mechanic showed me how to remove the wiper assembly. On the aftermarket POS that some PO installed on my car, there's no latch to release. All you do is push the wiper assembly firmly towards the pivot point of the arm and the assembly will slide out of the crook in the arm.

I plan to replace the entire assembly and go back to the factory part.
