Maryland "Exceeds Mechanical Limits" Title

I've seen two 87 300TD wagons listed on Ebay in the past few months with "exceeds mechanical limits" titles reported by Carfax. Both cars were out of Maryland and both sellers were confident that it was a clerical error. Neither seller decided to take the matter up with the DMV.

Obviously the 87 300TD doesn't have a 5-digit odometer, so it isn't an actual rollover that's been noted on the title. What other reasons would a DMV have for issuing such a title? Has anyone ever challenged a previously issued EML title and had it cleared?

Wisconsin used to brand titles with that automatically once an auto passes 99999, regardless of odometer digits. They did upgrade that as more vehicles had 6 place odometers.

My car, with 217k ACTUAL, has the word "EXEMPT" in the title spot for the mileage.

I guess they don't really care when they rack up so many...

In Alabama, all titles have exempt if the car is older than a certain year. (Not sure how old)

Ohio used to be that way too. The title itsself only had places for 5 digits so regardless of if the car had a sixth place or not, it was listed as "in excess of mechanical limits". They have since changed as well since pretty much all cars made lately have the sixth digit.
