Found it!
I am writing to give words of warning to other 617 drivers. The sound that I was hearing was the chain that drives the oil pump. I found it a couple of weeks ago when it broke and destroyed my motor.
After checking all of the things discussed above to no avail I went on driving. About 10000 miles after my original post the oil pressure gauge started to bounce. I thought that the oil line from the back of the filter might be leaking so I stopped to look. No leak. I was far from home and I continued to drive. I drove several miles before the pressure gauge started to bounce again. Before I could pull over I had lost all oil pressure. I shot the engine off, but not in time. When I took the oil pan off the oil pump chain was hanging in pieces from the oil pump drive gear. There where several metal bits in the oil pan too. Learn from my mistake. Find the noise. A bouncing oil pressure gauge is a sign of a failing oil pump.

Nope. The engine was re-buildable but I just put a used engine in it. I kept the wagon head with the SLS pump. (If anybody needs one let me know.) The block was not that bad. The pistons where not scored. The front main bearing got involved with the oil pump chain and it is trashed.
