What is the best oil for my 2.2 w201?

I did some searching but am still not sure as to what is the best oil to use in my '84 190D 2.2. Also, do you recommend ordering the filter from the MB dealer or are there after market filters that work even better?

Thanks!

Use a 229.3 or 229.5 spec oil from this list http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html, or any C rated oil (except for anything 30 weight) will suffice. As for the filter, Mahle, Mann, Knecht, and Hengst are all OE suppliers.

Thanks a lot!

You don't happen to know of a similar guide for transmission fluid do you?

What type of transmission do you have?

I have an automatic. Sorry, I should have specified.

I have around 200k on my w201. Would you recommend switching to a synthetic oil this late in the game?

Delo 400 ISOSYN or Mobil Delvac Super/MX, best value for money and excellent UOA. For tranny would be a good idea to go with Mobil Synthetic ATF.

Thanks!

Do you have any opinions regarding Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 15W40? I have read that it is their best diesel oil and keeps the engine extremely clean. What do you think of Amsoil 15w40 synthetic? I have access to Amsoil in my area so obtaining it is no problem. After searching Mobil Delvac Super/MX on Google, I noticed it appears to be comonly recommended for diesel Mercedes. Would you recommend it over the two oils I just mentioned?

Cost is of little convern to me when it comes to picking an oil so there is no need to take that into account when making a recommendation.
Premium Blue is a good oil although can't match either Delo or Delvac, Amsoil synth is top notch but if cost is not a concern, make it Delvac-I synthetic, you can't get a better diesel oil but I suggest you do some reading on the net on the UOAs for all these oils, in the end, you will find HDEO like Delo 400 or Delvac Super represent best value.

Thanks for the help! I believe I know what oil I should buy now

I do have one final question though. You said to use Mobile Synthetic ATF for my transmission. On the cap for the dipstick on my 190, it says to use ATF OL. My question is: What is OL and does it matter that the Mobile Synthetic does not say ATF OL but only ATF?

Don't worry about the OL, Mobil-I synthetic ATF is OEM factory fill at Mercedes and Porsche so you can be rest assured.

I've been running Rotella 15w/40 in my 190 D since I got it. I was put onto it by a diesel mechanic in the coal mines. Should I consider a different oil? Thanks for the heads-up on the transmission fluid.

Jim

Rotella is very good but give the Delo 400 or Delvac Super a try, excellent used oil analysis results are achieved on those with mixed engines including motorcycles, good high shear strength on them, synth oil in auto would go a long way and make your tranny run cooler as well.

Perfectly fine to use Valvoline ATF, actually a good idea on a leaky tranny, after its fixed you can use M-1 ATF.
