I've read that the older Mercedes diesels have injection pumps with a sump where you have to change the lube oil regularly. Up to what model year/engine is that applicable?

615 and 616 engines were the last with external lube.

All 617 and later engines have an oiling system connected to the crankcase.

Yup. My 78 200D had the M pump with the red cap. The red cap means separate oil.
