The 300CD needs a muffler; got some pinholes that made it fail inspection. Anybody have an opinion as to the Ansa or Bosal replacement part? Which is better; which came with the car? Thanks.

Wow, you failed from pinholes? The muffler on our 300D fell off (broke where the pipe goes into the back muffler) when I started it up a month ago...
![]() ![]() No inspections here so we don't have to worry about it. ![]() ![]() Might go straight pipe on it eventually.

When my 300D needed a rear muffler to pass inspection the local custom shop installed a Walker Dynomax for me. Very nice tone, I'm happy. RT

Had Bosals on several air-cooled VW busses (the heat from the exhaust on those things EATS mufflers/manifold pipes) and they usually outlasted the rest of the exhaust system!

thx
Yeah, NH is pretty tough for inspections, believe it or not, probably because of the rust problem. I thought maybe I could JB Weld the stupid holes a bit, then go in and get the car inspected. Not sure how well JB weld will hold up with heat, but it might last a few hours which is all I need. The holes are super-small so that might work, but it looks like I'll need a muffler (and a pipe) soon anyway. Friggin' northeast will eat your car alive if you aren't careful.

I remember my 1st inspection in NH....I thought they were going to keep taking my truck apart until they found a problem. Scary stuff!
I just installed an Ansa center muffler this past w/e. It fit nicely, but it literally weighs about 1/2 as much as the OE it replaced, so there is some lighter gauge stock there. Price was also <1/2 of the OE @ the dship!

So you think the Borsal might be a better deal than the Ansa, for longevity?
How much did an OE part go for?

I wouldnt split hairs here.. beware that if you don't want it to look like crap, youll have to spray paint it black with some high temp paint.

JB weld + black high temp paint will fix the existing system for about $10...
![]() My dad's SD has an old Bosal exhaust system on it, and its definatley heavy duty. It has held up well, and he did work to it to stop rust, and it has lasted a lot longer yet. The muffler that fell off our 300D was a five year old Ansa....so that doesn't say too much for them. The receipt from late 2001 is in the glove box for it. ![]() My car had a Bosal system as well, it lasted well....until I got sick of the leaking sounds and replaced it with an aftermarket muffler....which ended up having too much restriction, eventually my downpipe broke in half, so I got rid of ALL of it, and went with new Ansa (all they had) downpipe....seems heavy duty...and a 2.5" straight pipe from the end of the downpipe to the back of the car. Been on there 4 months and no rust yet. ![]() ![]()

Ok, got the JB weld in place but the pinholes might be too big (imagine trying to spread peanut butter over a pothole and you get my drift). Will try to add more once the original coat hardens a bit.
Anyway, while I was scraping, I noticed the manufacturer of the muffler looked like: "OILLEN" or something. Couldn't make it out but it has a part number beginning with 123 and a Mercedes star. Anybody know who the mfr is?

This may sway your opinion if you buy the muffler from Autozone which sell Bosal's they have a lifetime warranty.

I've mentioned it before, but if you want to go all out: Timevalve.com supplies lifetime 18-8 stainless steel systems for about 60% more than steel.
